    • A disk drive includes a magnetic element and a coil. The magnetic element includes an inner magnet set including first and second inner magnets. The magnetic element further includes an outer magnet set including first and second outer magnets. The first outer magnet is circumferentially disposed along the first inner magnet. The second outer magnet is circumferentially disposed along the second inner magnet. The coil is attached to a coil support of an actuator and disposed overlapping within a magnet periphery of the magnetic element. The coil includes an inner segment, an outer segment, and a pair of side segments electrically connecting the inner and outer segments. The inner segment is disposed overlapping with the inner magnet set, the outer segment being disposed overlapping with the outer magnet set. Each of the side segments is disposed equally overlapping with the inner and outer magnet sets.

    • A disc drive cartridge is disclosed comprising a central actuator arm pivot hub mounting one magnetic pole, which in turn rotates within and overlaps a u-shaped upright base and sleeve supporting a second non-aligned magnetic pole. The system relies on the radial repulsive forces of the separate magnetic poles to achieve significant radial stability; in certain embodiments, attractive forces between axially aligned magnetic poles or a magnetic pole and a sleeve of high permeability magnetic material are also utilized to enhance the axial stability of the system. The rotating hub supports on one side one or more actuator arms and on the other side a coil of a voice coil motor, so that this magnetic bearing can be the central pivot for a very small compact and low noise disc drive cartridge.

    • An actuator, suited for rapidly and precisely locating the head of a disc drive, reduces variations in flux density and reluctance torque across the entire effective stroke width of the actuator. The actuator, cooperating with a voice coil motor, includes a central yoke, upper and lower yokes aligned above and below the central yoke, and side yokes all formed of magnetic permeable material, a coil movable over the central yoke, and magnets supported from the upper and lower yokes and aligned with the stroke width of the coil. The upper and lower yoke pieces are profiled to have an increased radius in the region near the ends of these yokes and near the end of the coil stroke arc. This maximizes the flux density passing through these yokes so that the flux density and torque applied to the actuator is made linear. The simple structure improves performance without any substantial increase in the design envelope and operates at high efficiency. Alternative configurations provide for portions of the central pole piece beyond the end of the stroke of the coil to become gradually wider or thicker so that the flux flow around the corners where the central pole piece meets the side pieces of the yoke does not saturate and reduce torque at the actuator, and a variation where the magnets are shaped in the vertical axis perpendicular to the plane of motion of the coil in order to promote the flux passage or distribution through the yoke.
