摘要： A nematic liquid crystal display includes a first substrate provided with a common electrode, a second substrate provided with a pixel electrode, the second substrate being arranged to extend in parallel to the first substrate, and a liquid crystal cell which includes a nematic liquid crystal with a splay distortion. In the liquid crystal domains of a first type which are different in tilted-up direction of liquid crystal molecules coexist, and domains of a second type which are different in twist direction of liquid crystal molecules coexist. The liquid crystal may include a polymer that is a polymerized monomer or oligomer.

When no electric field is applied, liquid crystal molecules in the first and second auxiliary regions are directed in respective orientations that lie at 90° with respect to each other. When a voltage is applied, the liquid crystal molecules are rotated in the same direction while maintaining their orientations in the first and second auxiliary regions at 90° with respect to each other. The liquid crystal display has improved properties such as high contrast, quick response and excellent properties for an angle of visibility and can be manufactured without troublesome steps such as a photoresist step.

A voltage higher than a voltage to be applied between the electrode with the aperture and a counter electrode facing it is applied between the second electrode and the counter electrode, thereby controlling the rising direction of LC molecules. The LCD is easy to produce and achieves a great viewing angle. In addition, the LC contains a polymer in order to fix the rising directions of the LC molecules.
