    • A method for emplacing a medical anchor in a borehole in biological tissue, the method comprising the steps of providing a borehole in the biological tissue, inserting the anchor into the borehole with a tool such that the anchor is affixed to the tool and in approximate alignment with the borehole, manipulating the tool, the step of manipulating the tool causing the anchor to pivot about an axis perpendicular to the borehole and further comprising rotating the anchor in the borehole about the axis of the borehole, thereby causing the anchor to move outwardly in the borehole to engage a wall of the borehole and cut into the wall of the borehole and secure the anchor in a final position in the borehole such that the anchor is disposed approximately perpendicular to the axis of the borehole; and removing the tool from the borehole by moving the tool proximally in the borehole, thereby separating the anchor from the tool and leaving the anchor secured in the borehole.

    • A fixation device and apparatus for inserting the fixation device securely into a bore in an element, e.g. bone. The apparatus is a hand held device having an actuating mechanism and a longitudinally extending member coupled to the hand held device adapted to hold the fixation device at a distal end. The fixation device has a plurality of engaging members adapted to be moved outwardly when the fixation device is inserted into the bore to secure the fixation device in the bore. The extending member has an operating member coupled to the fixation device for exerting a force on the fixation device tending to cause the engaging members to extend outwardly to engage the wall of the bore. The operating member is releasably coupled to the fixation device so that once the fixation device is installed, the hand-held insertion apparatus can be removed. In one embodiment, the fixation device is releasably held by a forceps of the hand held device. In another embodiment, the fixation device is releasably held by a coupling member having a frangible connection adapted to break upon experiencing a preset tensile stress.

    • Apparatus for inserting an anchor into a bore in a medium, the anchor being adapted to engage the walls of the bore for securing the anchor into the medium. The bore is sized slightly larger than the outside diameter of the anchor in its undeployed condition. The apparatus includes a first manually graspable member having a distal end and a proximal end, the distal end being adapted to releasably receive the anchor. The manually graspable member has a central opening therethrough, the proximal end of the manually graspable member having a pivotable handle extending therefrom. A second member is movable longitudinally in the central opening and is attached to the pivotable handle and to the anchor. A release member couples the anchor to the second member. The pivotable handle is pivotable with respect to the first member and exerts a force longitudinally on the second member to move the second member longitudinally in the first member. This movement exerts a force on the anchor connected thereto to deform the anchor to cause the anchor to engage the walls of the medium thereby to secure the anchor in the medium. The force exerted on the second member further acts on the release member to separate the anchor from the second member when the anchor has deformed to engage the walls of the bore.

    • Apparatus and method for tying knots in suture at a interior surgical site. The apparatus comprises an elongated hollow member having a distal portion extending at an acute angle to the major longitudinal axis of the hollow member and terminating in a distal end surface, and a rod being partly flexible along its length and having a J-shaped hook at its distal end, wherein the hook is sized to grapple the suture which is to be manipulated by said device. The rod is received within the interior of the hollow member and adapted to reciprocate relative to the hollow member so that the hook can be moved between (i) an extended position wherein the mouth of the hook is spaced from the distal end surface of the hollow member by more than the thickness of the suture, whereby the suture can be grappled by the hook, (ii) an intermediate position wherein the mouth of the hook is spaced from the distal end surface of the hollow member by less than the thickness of the suture, but the interior base of the hook is spaced from the distal end surface of the hollow member by more than the thickness of the suture, whereby a suture grappled by the hook will be slidably captured to the hollow member, and (iii) a withdrawn position wherein the interior base of the hook is spaced from the distal end surface of the hollow member by less than the thickness of the suture, whereby a suture grappled by the hook will be fixedly captured to the hollow member.

    • The prior art discloses a surgical stapler having means for forming a staple, and means for activating the forming means. The forming means have an anvil surface terminating in a movable flange and a track movably containing a forming blade. The improved stapler of this invention comprises the activating means cooperatively attached to the forming means, and the anvil surface having a boss and the forming blade having an opening. The anvil surface boss has an arcuate motion dependent on the linear motion of the forming blade opening. Alternatively, the improved stapler also comprises a formed staple stripping surface adjacent at least two opposing sides of the anvil flange.
