    • A textile machine apparatus for handling tubes having remaining yarn thereon includes a branch path for supporting tube support members, which individually support tubes thereon, for travel to and from the discharge assembly of a textile winding machine. The tube handling apparatus also includes a sensor disposed along the discharge transport path of the tube support members from the winding stations of the textile winding machine for discriminating among tubes having no yarn thereon and tubes having remaining yarn thereon. A guide member is operatively connected to the discriminating sensor for guiding the tube support members supporting tubes having remaining yarn thereon onto the branch path for transport therealong to a tube stripping device, which strips the tubes of the remaining yarn. The stripped tubes are then returned to the discharge transport path at a location upstream of the discriminating sensor. In one aspect of the invention, the discriminating sensor discriminates among tubes having less than a predetermined minimum amount of yarn thereon, tubes having more than a predetermined minimum amount of yarn thereon, and tubes having no yarn thereon.

    • A yarn end preparing apparatus is provided for drawing off a yarn end of a textile yarn package and thereafter rewinding the drawn out yarn end onto the yarn package at a preferred location thereon. The yarn preparing apparatus includes a suction housing supported on a pair of vertical guide rods for movement parallel to the axis of a yarn package to be prepared. A pair of linkage members, each comprising a conduit, are pivotably connected to one another with their respective conduits communicated with one another for applying suction through the conduits to the suction housing to thereby effect drawing in of a yarn end through a suction slot of the suction housing. A light beam emitting member is mounted forwardly of the suction slot for emitting a light beam detected by a light beam detecting member mounted on an opposite forward side of the suction slot. During downward movement of the suction housing to dispose the suction slot adjacent the tapered top portion of a yarn package, the light beam is interrupted by the body of yarn on the yarn package as the suction slot reaches an optimal spacing from the yarn package and a control unit stops the movement of the suction housing in response to the interruption of the light beam to automatically position the suction slot at a predetermined optimal spacing from the tapered top portion of a yarn package independent of the relative axial position of the tapered top portion.

    • A method and apparatus for preparing a yarn package for a subsequent yarn restarting operation are provided. The apparatus includes an air jet for directing a tangential stream of pressurized air against a yarn package to effect loosening of a length of auxiliary yarn which has been wound on the yarn package during a prior unsuccessful yarn restarting operation in which the auxiliary yarn length failed to piece with the yarn still to be wound onto the yarn package. The air jet operates in cooperation with a suction conduit to completely unwind the unsuccessfully pieced auxiliary yarn length from the yarn package to thereby prepare the yarn package for receiving another length of auxiliary yarn during a subsequent yarn restarting operation. According to one aspect of the invention, the auxiliary yarn travels over a roller supported at the free end of a delivery arm mounted on a traveling service unit and the roller is selectively disposable in rotation transmitting engagement with the lower roller of a roller pair of the drafting device to effect feeding of the auxiliary yarn onto the yarn package. If the auxiliary yarn has not successfully pieced with the still-to-be-wound yarn after a predetermined lapse of time, the roller on the delivery arm is positioned against an upper roller of a roller pair of the drafting device to effect unwinding of the auxiliary yarn previously wound onto the yarn package.

    • A method and apparatus for restoring the normal winding of yarn following a yarn break during a textile winding process is provided. A lower yarn end engaging member executes a predetermined number of attempts to engage a lower yarn end and a package exchange member exchanges a supply package for a fresh supply package in response to the detection of the absence of engagement of a lower yarn end after the predetermined number of lower yarn end engaging cycles. Once a lower yarn end is detected, an upper yarn end engaging means performs a predetermined number of attempts to engage an upper yarn end. If engagement of an upper yarn end is detected after a predetermined number of attempts, the lower yarn end and the upper yarn end are joined together and normal winding is resumed. If an upper yarn end is not detected after a predetermined number of attempts, a problem indicating member is activated to indicate to an operator that normal winding of yarn cannot be restored.

    • An automatic yarn winding apparatus includes plural aligned winding stations and a delivery conveyor extending along the winding stations for supplying thereto yarn packages comprising yarn tube support members carrying fully wound yarn tubes. The delivery conveyor is driven alternately in opposite directions. Package entrance conveyors supply yarn packages to the delivery conveyor at least two spaced locations therealong. Switchable mechanisms are provided for selectively forming and removing at least one package barrier along the delivery conveyor between the entrance locations for preventing package movement therebeyond. By provision of additional package entrance conveyors and package barrier mechanisms, the delivery conveyor can be effectively divided into multiple transport sections for respectively supplying differing groups of the winding stations with differing respective groups of yarn packages.
