摘要： A voice prosthesis includes a cylindrical body for placement in an opening formed in the tracheoesophageal wall. The body has a first end lying on the esophageal side of the tracheoesophageal wall when the prosthesis is placed in the opening and a second end lying on the tracheal side of the tracheoesophageal wall. The body provides a passageway for airflow from its second end to its first end to provide alaryngeal speech-producing airflow from the esophagus. A first backflow-preventing valve controls the passageway to prevent the flow of fluids from the esophagus through the passageway to the trachea. A second backflow preventing valve is provided in series with the first backflow-preventing valve to prevent flow of fluids from the esophagus through the passageway to the trachea in the event of incompetence of the first backflow-preventing valve in the open or partially open orientation.

摘要： A voice prosthesis insertion assembly is described including a voice prosthesis device and a placement tool for positioning the device in a fistula connecting a trachea and anesophagus of a laryngectomized patient. The voice prosthesis device has an attachment means formed thereon and the placement tool has an attachment means molded integrally and homogeneously thereon for detachably interconnecting the device with the tool. As a result of this construction, a positive interconnection of the voice prosthesis device and the placement tool is maintained during positioning of the device in the fistula and such interconnection may be maintained until detachment is desired.

摘要： A method for simulating speech in a tracheotomized individual includes providing a source of compressed air, regulating the air pressure, and controlling the flow of air from the source between a condition in which airflow is stopped and a condition in which airflow is allowed in response to actuation by the individual. The air flow is supplied to a reed to vibrate it, and the resulting vibration-modulated air flow is introduced into the pharynx of the individual, permitting the individual to articulate audibly comprehensible speech. Apparatus for carrying out this method is also described.
