    • Apparatus and method for testing an open-hole well and obtaining a fluid sample therefrom. The apparatus comprises a compression packer on a drill pipe. Disposed in the drill pipe is a housing, defining a surge chamber therein, and a closure valve in communication with the surge chamber. A fluid sampler is in communication with the surge chamber. In operation, the packer is placed in a set position by setting down weight. The closure valve is pressure actuated so that fluid is flowed from a formation or zone of interest into the surge chamber and then into the sampler. By opening a housing valve at an upper end of the surge chamber, formation fluid may be forced back into the formation or zone of interest by a bull-heading operation. In a preferred embodiment, the packer and drill pipe are disconnectable from the remainder of the apparatus, and the packer is drillable.

    • Method and apparatus for testing and sampling open-hole oil and gas wells. The apparatus includes a packer, a surge chamber, a closure valve which may be opened to flow fluid into the surge chamber, and a sampler. The surge chamber may be one of a pair of surge chambers, and the closure valve may be one of a pair of closure valves so that two surges may be carried out prior to obtaining a fluid sample in the sampler. In operation, the packer is placed in a set position by setting down weight. The closure valves are also actuated when weight is set down. The first closure valve has a first predetermined time delay before opening so that the packer may be set, and the second closure valve has a second predetermined time delay so that the packer may be set and the first closure valve opened before a fluid sample is captured. By opening a vent tool at an upper end of the uppermost surge chamber, formation fluid may be forced back into the formation or zone of interest by a bull-heading operation. In a preferred embodiment, portions of the apparatus are detachable in the event of sticking of the apparatus in the well. In the method of the two-surge test, a clean fluid sample for capturing in the sampler is provided. All of the steps are carried out without flowing fluid to the surface.

    • A coiled tubing conveyed sampling apparatus includes an actuator housing having a housing interior and having a proximal housing end including a connector for connecting the housing to a coiled tubing string so that a tubing bore of the coiled tubing string is communicated with the housing interior. A one-way check valve is disposed in the housing interior and allows well fluid from the well bore to fill the tubing bore of the coiled tubing string as the sampling apparatus is run into the well. The check valve isolates the tubing bore of the coiled tubing string from the well when pressure in the tubing bore exceeds pressure in the well. A sampling tool is attached to a lower end of the actuator housing. A pressure responsive actuator is disposed in the housing interior and actuates the sampling tool in response to pressure in the tubing bore of the coiled tubing string exceeding pressure in the well by a first predetermined value so that a well fluid sample is drawn into the sampling tool and trapped in the sampling tool. The apparatus is especially useful in taking samples from horizontal portions of highly deviated wells.

    • A system is provided for remotely controlling a downhole tool in a well. A plurality of substantially identical command signals are transmitted into the well. Each of the command signals is received at the downhole tool by a controller having information stored therein identifying an operative command signal signature associated with that tool. Upon comparing each command signal to the stored information and confirming that the command signal contains the operative command signal signature associated with that tool, a control signal is generated by the controller for each confirmed command signal. An operating element of the downhole tool is advanced one position in a repeating series of operational positions in response to each successive control signal generated by the controller.

    • A retrievable fluid control valve apparatus is provided for controlling fluid flow into a tubing string of a well. The control valve apparatus includes a housing. The housing includes a seal for sealingly engaging a landing nipple of the tubing string. A flow passage is defined through the housing and has an open end defined in the housing below the seal. A flow port is defined through the housing and communicates the flow passage with an exterior of the housing above the seal. A flow valve is disposed in the housing and is movable between a closed position wherein the flow passage is closed and an open position wherein the flow passage is open. A spring is associated with the flow valve for biasing the flow valve toward its closed position. A differential area piston is associated with the flow valve for overcoming the force of the spring and moving the flow valve to its open position when a fluid pressure in the tubing string exterior of the housing exceeds a predetermined value. A dampening sub is included in the control valve apparatus for damping closing movement of the valve from its open position to its closed position. The damping sub extremely overdamps the system thus eliminating hydrodynamically induced flutter of the spring biased valve, and also providing for a soft closing motion of the valve.

    • A motor and rotor catch assembly for preventing loss of broken motor parts downhole. The assembly comprises a motor including a rotor supported inside a stator housing. A rotor bolt is connected to the upper end of the rotor, and is supported for axial movement within a rotor bolt housing from a running position to a deployed position. If the stator housing breaks or backs off, the attached rotor bolt shifts to the deployed position. In the deployed position, the bolt substantially reduces flow to the stator housing and simultaneously opens bypass ports to vent fluid to the annulus instead. In this way, the rotor is prevented from spinning rapidly, the diverted fluid creates a pressure change that alerts the operator to the motor failure, and the diverted fluid allows continued removal of debris and cuttings from the well bore.
