    • A circularly polarized patch antenna is provided, which facilitates optimization of the axial ratio adjustment and impedance matching, and which has an improved degree of freedom to optimize the axial ratio adjustment and the impedance matching. This antenna is comprised of (a) a dielectric substrate having a first surface located on one side and a second surface located on the other side; (b) an approximately rectangular patch serving as a radiating element formed on the first surface of the substrate; the patch having an aperture from which the first surface of the substrate is exposed, a first side, and a second side adjoining to the first side; the first side having a first slot that inwardly extends approximately perpendicular to the first side; the second side having a second slot that inwardly extends approximately perpendicular to the second side; (c) a ground conductor serving as a ground plane formed on the second surface of the substrate to be opposite to the patch; and (d) a feedpoint located on the patch for feeding or deriving electric power to or from the patch. A second patch is additionally formed over the first surface of the substrate to cover the first patch through a dielectric layer, in which two different operating frequencies are realized.

    • A surface mountable ultracapacitor device is disclosed. The device comprises: a package including sidewalls extending in a direction generally perpendicular to a base to define an upper end wherein an interior cavity is defined between an inner surface of the base and the sidewalls; first and second conductive members disposed on the inner surface of the base; first and second external terminations on the outer surface of the base and electrically connected to the first and second conductive members, respectively; an ultracapacitor positioned within the interior cavity and including a housing and an electrode assembly and electrolyte within the housing, the ultracapacitor including first and second leads electrically connected to the first and second conductive members, respectively; a resin provided within the interior cavity and encapsulating at least a portion of the ultracapacitor; and one or more vents extending through the resin and at least to a surface of the resin. The present invention also discloses a printed circuit board including the aforementioned surface mountable ultracapacitor device as well as a communications device including the aforementioned surface mountable ultracapacitor device.

    • An antenna system, which is coupled to one or more first transceivers for processing signals according to one or more protocols, respectively, and to a second transceiver for performing a function in conjunction with at least one of the one or more protocols, is provided. The antenna system includes a first antenna, a second antenna, a circuit coupled to the first and second antennas, and a controller configured to control the circuit for enabling beam forming and beam steering or for enabling the function in conjunction with the at least one of the one or more protocols. The circuit includes a phase shifting block configured to provide multiple phase shifts between a first radiation pattern associated with the first antenna and a second radiation pattern associated with the second antenna to generate multiple combined radiation patterns corresponding to the phase shifts, respectively, for the beam forming and beam steering purposes.

    • A communication system is provided, including an antenna coupled to multiple RF paths, one or more matching networks, multiple switches, a controller configured to control the one or more matching networks and the multiple switches, and a look-up table coupled to the controller, the look-up table including characterization data according to frequency bands and conditions. The multiple switches are controlled to engage the signal path corresponding to the frequency band selected. The one or more matching networks are controlled by the controller to provide optimum impedance for the frequency band selected and a condition detected during a time interval with reference to the look-up table. Additional switches may be included to improve isolation.
