    • Reverse link busy bits are independently generated by each base station and indicate whether a base station has reached a reverse link capacity limit. A remote station combines multipath components of the reverse link busy bits in its Active Set and in response transmits a reverse link signal only when all of the reverse link busy bits indicate that the base stations in the Active Set have reverse link capacity. In one description, the remote station weights the reverse link busy signals in accordance with the signal strength of the transmitting base station and determines whether to transmit based on the weighted sum of the busy signals. In another description, the remote station weights the reverse link busy signals in accordance with the signal strength of the transmitting base station and determines a maximum reverse link data rate based on the weighted sum of the busy signals.

    • A power control system for communication systems which utilizes a ternary signaling scheme to reduce or eliminate limit cycling which occurs as the result of using a binary signaling scheme is described. The power control values (each having one of three possible values) are not encoded and are punctured onto the data to improve the response time of the power control loop and allow for dynamic adjustment of the transmit power. The power up, power down, and do nothing commands are represented by positive, negative, and zero values (e.g., +1, −1, and 0), respectively. The remote station decreases its transmit power if any base station issues a power down command, maintains its transmit power if no base stations issue a power down command and at least one base station issues a do nothing command, and increases its transmit power if all base station issue power up commands.

    • The character of the noise in a series of incoming symbols received over a wireless link is determined. A series of corresponding bits are recovered based upon the series of incoming symbols. The series of corresponding bits are encoded to determine a series of recovered symbols. A vector product of the series of incoming symbols and the series of recovered symbols is determined. A difference between two symbols within the vector product is determined, wherein the two symbols were transmitted over the wireless link in close temporal proximity to one another. The expected value of a non-orthogonal noise portion of the series of incoming symbols is determined based upon an expected value of the difference between the two symbols.

    • In a communications network, a network user communicates through a remote unit via at least one base station. The communications network includes a first mobile switching center for controlling communications through a first set of base stations and a second mobile switching center for controlling communications through a second set of base stations. The network also includes a service providing base station controlled by the first mobile switching center and providing service to a first transition coverage area using a first pseudorandom noise code. The first transition coverage area defines a boundary between a first system controlled by the first mobile switching center and a second system controlled by the second mobile switching center. The network further includes a passage providing base station controlled by the second mobile switching center for providing service to the first transition area using a second pseudorandom noise code offset in time by a first amount from the first pseudorandom noise code. The passage providing base station provides service to a remote unit only if the remote unit is entering the first transition coverage area while exiting the second system or is about to exit the first transition coverage area while entering the second system.
