    • A method of detecting stall of a multi-phase motor operated in a micro-stepped mode, the method comprising: a) applying at least two phase-shifted micro-stepped waveforms to the phase windings of the motor; b) determining a sum of currents flowing through the phase windings, and taking samples of the sum of currents synchronously with the application of the micro-stepped waveforms; c) calculating a moving average or moving sum of the samples over one or more “full steps” of the phase-shifted waveforms; d) calculating an adaptive threshold based on the samples; e) detecting stall of the motor when the moving average is larger than the adaptive threshold. An electrical circuit and a computer program are arranged to perform the method.

    • A stop and jamming detection system in a stepping motor determines a parameter from the profile of an instantaneous motor variable and compares it to a reference value. A signal for the stop and jamming detection system is generated therefrom. Provided for this purpose is an analysis circuit which detects, as the instantaneous motor variable, the voltage that is induced in at least one unenergized winding of the stepping motor and is brought about by an energized winding of the stepping motor, and analyzes it as to whether the stepping motor is jammed or movable. In the analysis by the analysis circuit, a decision is made as to a hard or an elastic jam. With a hard jam, the stationary armature means that no voltage is induced, while with an elastic jam, because the step is not completed, the recoil of the armature into its original position induces an opposite-phase voltage peak which is detected.

    • A stepper motor controller that controls acceleration of a stepper motor so that, once the stepper motor is stabilized at 500 pps, acceleration of the motor is increased to 667 pps for four steps, during which time the speed of the stepper motor reaches about 900 pps. Then, acceleration of the stepper motor is increased to 1,000 pps, allowing the motor to increase to that speed without degeneration of the speed. In other words, when the stopper motor nears the maximum possible speed at an acceleration of 667 pps, the next acceleration is applied. In this way, acceleration of the stepper motor can be changed between levels having a great difference in driving frequency without causing the stepper motor to degenerate.
