    • A self-diagnosing apparatus for a vehicles capable of reliably storing diagnostic data on high priority malfunctions. A control unit comprises a CPU and a RAM for storing stores contents even when an ignition key is turned off. The self-diagnosing apparatus detects a plurality of malfunctions. The plurality of malfunctions are classified into high priority malfunctions and low priority malfunctions. The RAM has a plurality of storage areas including a first frame and a second frame, the first frame being made to correspond to high priority malfunctions and the second frame to low priority malfunctions. The CPU inputs diagnostic data from each section of the motor vehicle necessary for analyzing instrument malfunctions and updates the stored contents of each area of the first and second frames. When the CPU detects an instrument malfunction, it sets a malfunction code at the beginning area of the frame corresponding to the priority at which the instrument malfunction is classified, and inhibits subsequent updating of the stored contents. Therefore, diagnostic data is stored for each priority.

    • There is described a motor vehicle having a spark ignition engine in an engine compartment and having automatic advance and retard device to advance or retard the angle of the firing of the spark relative to the top dead center of the pistons in the cylinders of the spark ignition engine. The engine has a control device including a microphone carried on a vibration damping mounting on the vehicle close to the engine to detect sounds emitted during the running of the vehicle. A frequency filter is connected to the microphone connected to the detector to permit transmission of sound only in a narrow band of sound frequencies between 4,000 and 20,000 Hz which correspond to the sound range of sounds caused by knock. The output from the filter is compared with a datum and when this exceeds such datum, the automatic advance and retard is retarded to prevent knock continuing.

    • To permit continued operation of a vehicle in spite of malfunction of an electronic ignition computer system, or any other electronic control module in an automotive vehicle, a transducer (10) provides an output to a trigger stage which has its output connected a digitally operating microprocessor (17) and to a bypass or transfer switch (21). The output from the microprocessor is connected to an analog and operating output stage (19, 20) to be controlled by the digital system of the microprocessor (17). Upon sensing of low operating voltage (U) as determined, for example, by a threshold switch (22), or of starting condition the switch (21) is closed, bypassing or interrupting connection to the microprocessor, and directly connecting signals from the transducer output stage to the input of the ignition circuit to permit operation under emergency conditions. The analog portion of the system is a single integrated module, separate from the digitally operating microprocessor (17) for ease of error diagnosis, maintenance and repair. This is particularly important with digitally operating control systems (17) which are subject to malfunction under low voltage conditions or upon occurrence of stray or distrubance signals in the network, for example under starting conditions.

    • A system for diagnosing an internal combustion engine. The system comprises: a control signal generating system for monitoring the operation of the engine, such ignition, and for generating a control signal; a driven system, such as a fuel injection system, operated in dependency on the control signal. A first diagnosis circuit is provided for diagnosis of the operation of the control signal generating system and for producing an output when trouble occurs in the system; and a second diagnosis circuit is provided for diagnosing the operation of the driven system and for producing an output when trouble occurs in the system. Results of diagnosis by the first and second diagnosis circuits are indicated by lamps. A logic gate is provided to be controlled by the output of the first diagnosis circuit so that the lamp for the second diagnosis circuit does not indicate trouble in the driven system.
