摘要： A mirror assembly security system for a vehicle includes an exterior mirror assembly and a light module removably positioned within the exterior mirror housing. The light module is moisture impervious and includes an enclosure, a light-emitting opening in the enclosure, a light source in the enclosure radiating light through the light-emitting opening, and a cover for the light-emitting opening adapted to direct the light from the light source to an area adjacent the vehicle to create a security area. The light source may be supported by a pair of electrical contacts provided on the inner surface of the enclosure. The enclosure wall supporting the electrical contacts is preferably flexible, in order to allow the light source to be captured by the contacts. Attachment of the cover adds rigidity to the enclosure to prevent further flexure of the enclosure wall in order to firmly retain the light source. The enclosure is preferably configured so that the same unit can be installed in both left and right handed exterior mirror assemblies even though the light module generates a non-symmetrical light pattern. A reflective surface is provided in the enclosure which cooperates with the cover to produce a generally collimated light pattern.

The air bag can also provide the officer additional time to get backup personnel to aid him if the situation warrants it. The bag is inflated and maintains a constant pressure by an air pump.

摘要： A method and system for discriminating motor vehicle crashes to actuate a safety restraint (10) utilizes an optical vehicle occupant position detector (12) to generate data (22) representative of the position of an occupant relative to fixed structure within the vehicle. The data (22) is subsequently used by a signal processor/discrimination unit (26) as criteria for a parameter based crash discrimination analysis, and for adjusting parameters of the discrimination analysis, such as changing the discrimination threshold values. The occupant position data optimizes the discrimination analysis used in the system (10) due to the system's ability to customize the discrimination analysis in real time to match actual conditions of a vehicle occupant. Occupant position is determined by detecting the relative intensity, or average of scattering angles of a light beam (34) reflectively scattered by the occupant (24). An optical, low threshold safing sensor (40) can further be used to provide system calibration, discrimination of spurious occupant movement, and data representative of vehicle acceleration.

The starting apparatus is provided so as to subtract a predetermined value from an acceleration signal fed from G sensor and integrate the subtracted acceleration signal, and forcedly set an integrated value to zero if the integrated value is less than zero. The deployment decision includes a "time to wait" step in which the control determines "when to deploy", and a "severity" step in which the control determines "whether to deploy". The "time to wait" step is based on an estimation of occupant displacement due to the crash, and the "severity" step is based on an estimation of the crash severity. The control method is modified to initiate earlier deployment when the acceleration data is indicative of a localized impact which does not involve the full front structure of the vehicle, such as an angle or pole impact.

The pattern extends laterally onto the vehicle and downwardly and rearwardly of the mirror housing. In this manner, the lighted security zone extends from the vehicle door to the rear of the vehicle. An actuator for the floodlight includes a base unit in the vehicle and a remote transmitter wherein the base unit is responsive to a signal from the remote transmitter in order to actuate the floodlight. The actuator may further include a lockout device in order to prevent actuation of the floodlight during operation of the vehicle. A signal light is additionally included in the exterior mirror housing in order to project a second pattern of light from the mirror housing extending laterally away from the vehicle and rearwardly of the vehicle. In this manner, the second pattern cannot be directly observed by the driver of the vehicle but may be observed by the driver of another vehicle passing the equipped vehicle. The signal light operates in unison with a turn signal, brake signal, or both, of the equipped vehicle.

摘要： A quick release restraint device for such uses as restraining prisoners being transported in police vehicles, which includes a mechanism to quickly release the restraint device in the event it is necessary to rapidly move the restrained prisoner out of the vehicle in the case of an accident or other emergency wherein his life or safety may be endangered. The restraint comprises a strap member having a buckle at one end to secure to the handcuffs of the prisoner, and a releasable loop at the other end to secure to an anchoring member of some kind permanently affixed to the vehicle. The releasable loop is doubled back, with the doubled back portion received and held in an elongated sleeve which surrounds a portion of the strap. The releasable loop is held in place as long as the doubled back portion is within the elongated sleeve, but it may be rapidly undone to release the prisoner by pulling the doubled back portion out of the sleeve by a hand grasp member which projects outwardly of the sleeve.
