    • A composite utility knife blade and method of making such a blade involves butt joining a tool steel wire to a front edge of an alloy steel backing strip. The wire is electron beam welded to the backing strip to form a composite strip defining a first metal portion formed by the alloy steel backing strip, a second metal portion formed by the tool steel wire, and a weld region joining the first and second metal portions. The composite strip is then annealed, and the annealed strip is straightened to eliminate any camber therein. The annealed composite strip is then hardened such that the first metal portion defines a surface hardness within the range of approximately 38 Rc to approximately 52 Rc, and the second metal portion defines a surface hardness within the range of approximately 60 Rc to approximately 57 Rc.

    • A razor blade having guard elements deposited in recessed guard seats formed in the cutting edge and flanking surfaces of the blade. The guard elements may be deposited by electrochemical plating and their retention on the blade is enhanced by the recessed seats formed in the blade surfaces. The guard seats extend rearwardly from the blade edge a significant distance and may be interconnected by a transversely extending locking guard seat into which guard element material is also deposited.A method for applying the guard elements to the blade comprises applying a photoresist material to the blade edge and adjacent region, fixing a photographic image on the photoresist material in accordance with a predetermined guard element pattern, removing a portion of the photoresist material in accordance with the pattern and etching the underlying blade to form the guard seats. Thereafter the guard elements are deposited in the guard seats as by electroplating and the remaining photoresist material is removed to expose the blade edge and guard elements.

    • A method consisting in converting a coil of hot-rolled band steel for tools and razor blades into an open coil in which its convolutions are spaced apart from one another, and immersing the open coil in a series of salt baths. First of all, the open coil is immersed for 5 to 30 minutes in a salt bath held at a temperature in a range from 550.degree. to 750.degree. C. to preheat the open coil and cause preliminary precipitation of carbides. The preheated open coil is immersed for 5 to 30 minutes in a salt bath held at a temperature in a range from the temperature immediately above Acl point to the temperature of Acl point plus 50.degree. C. to make the band steel austenitic in structure. The open coil is then immersed for over 10 minutes in a salt bath held at a temperature in a range from the temperature immediately below Arl point to the temperature of Arl point minus 80.degree. C. so that the isothermal transformation may be completed. Finally, the open coil is immersed for 3 to 10 minutes in a salt bath held at a temperature in a range from 600.degree. to 650.degree. C. and air cooled thereafter. The method enables to produce band steels for tools and razor blades which contain carbides occurring in a small spheroidal structure of uniform size, have good cold-workability, have freedom from decarburizing and carburizing, and have high amenability to hardening.

    • The invention relates to razor blades and methods of manufacture thereof, the blades comprising a single crystal of alumina having a cutting edge thereon. The cutting edges can be formed by grinding of single crystals of alumina, preferably mounted to facilitate handling, in addition to or alternatively to dissolution or etching. The crystals are preferably grown in a shape approximating to the desired cross-section of blade to facilitate formation of the cutting edge. The alumina preferably has at the most a low content of impurities. Strengthening of the cutting edge can be effected by the implantation of large ions in and/or adjacent the cutting edge.

    • A blank of a plurality of vitreous materials is prepared by selecting a first vitreous material which is relatively resistant to chemical etching and grinding it to a desired blade configuration with dimensions which are a multiple of the dimension of the desired end product as represented by a predetermined attenuation ratio, then a second vitreous material which is susceptible to chemical etching is selected and prepared to have a portion complementary to said blade portion of said first material, and the blank comprising both matrials positioned in complementary contacting relationship is heated to about their softening points and drawn down with a desired attenuation to produce a continuous blade ribbon in said first vitreous material of uniform predetermined cross-sectional dimensions. The second material is then etched away from the ribbon comprising the first material and cut into desired blade lengths.
