    • A cordless telephone includes a base unit connected to a telephone network line and a handset unit having a rechargeable battery for its operating power supply. The handset unit and the base unit are connected through a communication channel by radio waves during a telephone communication. An identification code is transmitted from one of the units to the other prior to a communication between the two units. The identification code transmitted by one unit is examined in the other unit, and a communication channel is established between the two units only when the transmitted identification code is determined be correct. The handset has a first recharge detecting circuit for detecting a recharge of the rechargeable battery and a first memory for storing the identification code, and the base unit has a recharging circuit for recharging the rechargeable battery, a second recharge detecting circuit for detecting a recharge of the rechargeable battery by the recharging circuit, and a second memory for storing the identification code. When the first recharge detecting circuit detects a recharge of the rechargeable battery, the identification code stored in the second memory is extracted through recharging contacts of the handset unit and the base unit, and the identification code thus extracted is recorded in the first memory.

    • To verify that the handset of a cordless telephone unit is still within the radio coverage area of the fixed station, rather than attempt to establish connection with the switched network and verify contact as a result of receiving a dial tone, or dialing a special number in the network, a user can merely activate a radio coverage verification circuit in the handset and fixed station. Through use of these circuits, in addition to the identification number of the station, a code is transmitted. The identification and code, when received by the opposite station, are verified with number and code values stored in that station, and the number and code are then retransmitted as an acknowledgement signal. An annunciator in the handset provides a visual or aural warning to the user if the acknowledgement signal is not received, indicating that the handset is not within the radio coverage area of the fixed station.

    • A cordless telephone having a fixed unit and a portable unit which are capable of exchanging an identification (ID) signal assigned to the telephone with each other is disclosed. The portable unit includes a receiver circuit which in turn includes a low-frequency section. A cut-off/attenuation circuit, a logic circuit and a timer circuit are built in the low-frequency section of the receiver circuit. The cut-off/attenuation circuit cuts off or attenuates the ID signal when a conversation is under way. The logic circuit controls the cut-off/attenuation circuit while the timer circuit determines a period of time for the ID signal to be cut off or attenuated. The cut-off/attenuation circuit is enabled after the transmission of the ID signal over a predetermined period of time as determined by the timer circuit, thereby cutting off or attenuating the ID signal returned from the fixed unit to the portable unit.

    • A wireless telephone communication system 10 is provided in which a portable unit 12 communicates with a base unit 11 over a wireless (radio) communication link 15. Access to a telephone network 15b by the portable unit 12, via the base unit 11, is permitted when the base and portable units have corresponding ID codes stored therein. The base ID code is hardwired into the base unit 11, and the portable unit 12 learns its ID code from the base unit in response to mechanically coupling the base and portable units together via plug and socket assemblies 28 and 45. The base and portable units each have associated microprocessors 22 and 40 which implement the transfer of an ID code to the portable unit from the base unit via conductors (24'-42') which are part of the plug and socket assemblies. The plug and socket assemblies, when mated, also provide a connection between a battery charging supply circuit 25 in the base and a battery 46 in the portable. Reset circuits 29 and 50 are provided in the base and portable units and control the resetting of the microprocessors 22 and 40.
