    • A flame is detected by signal analysis for intensity variations in radiation received by a sensor. A low-frequency spectrum of the signal is analyzed for mid- and cut-off frequencies, and the signal is classified as periodic or non-periodic. Periodic signals with a mid-frequency (.omega..sub.mp) above a first frequency value (G.sub.1), and non-periodic signals with a cut-off frequency (.omega..sub.gc) above a second frequency value (G.sub.2) are classified as interfering signals. The first frequency value is determined by the flicker frequency of a stationary flame having a magnitude corresponding to a flame of minimum magnitude to be detected. The second frequency value is selected greater than the first frequency value (G.sub.1).

    • A continuous temperature sensing cable formed of a polymer containing conductive and semi-conductive fillers such as polyethylene with carbon black, powdered metals and metal oxides controlled within the range of from about eight percent (8%) to about fifteen percent (15%). The composition is extruded with a pair of elongated substantially parallel conductors which are spaced apart along the longitudinal length of the cable. The conductors are single endedly connected to a control/alarm device for monitoring the continuous length of the temperature sensing cable. The control/alarm device may be a time domain reflectometer TDR for accurate determination of localized discontinuities caused by high temperatures along the length of the temperature sensing cable. Alternatively, a critical voltage may be applied single-endedly to the conductors and serially connected to an audible alarm to detect tunneling conduction when operated at a temperature near the melt temperature of the composition.

    • A fire alarm and heat detection system and apparatus employs a thermoplastic film tape, of a plastic material which may or may not be heat shrinkable, e.g., polyvinyl chloride, polyethylene, polypropylene, rubber hydrochloride, polyvinylidene chloride, polyester, or nylon, having a substantial drop in tensil strength at a predetermined temperature. A conductor wire is supported on and extends for the entire length of the tape. The wire may be round in cross section or a flat foil and embedded in the tape or formed of two separate film tapes, heat sealed or adhesively laminated together or supported, by printing or the like, on the surface of a single tape. The tape and wire are supported across a supporting frame or yoke having supporting members spring loaded apart to apply a predetermined tension which may be preselected whereby the tape and wire will break on occurrence of a predetermined temperature. A circuit continuity monitoring device is connected to the conductor wire to detect interruption and an alarm mechanism connected thereto generates an alarm signal upon detection of the interruption of continuity of the conductor wire. The system differs from systems utilizing heat shrinkage of a plastic film in that the temperature of operation is variable while the heat shrinkage point is fixed for various plastic films.
