    • A firearm includes a receiver. A bolt carrier is moveable relative to the receiver between a firing position and a rearward position. A hand guard is coupled to the receiver. A gas tube is disposed at least partially within and fixed relative to the hand guard. A handle assembly is at least partially disposed in the hand guard and is moveable between a forward position and a charging position. The handle assembly has a body and an elongated member extending from the body toward the bolt carrier. The elongated member is disposed about the gas tube and is movable relative to the gas tube between the forward and charging positions. The elongated member engages the bolt carrier to move the bolt carrier from the firing position to the rearward position when the handle assembly moves from the forward position to the charging position.

    • A charging handle for a firearm having a barrel, a stock, a receiver, a receiver trigger and a bolt reciprocating within the receiver. The firearm may include a gas tube for directing powder gases to cause operation of the bolt within the receiver. The charging handle comprising a generally elongated spar having a forward end portion in the direction of the firearm barrel and a rearward end portion in the direction of the firearm stock. The charging handle includes a latch engaging the receiver to hold the charging handle in a forward most position and, extending laterally from said rearward portion, an offset arm extending at least a portion of the length of the elongated shaft member in the direction of the firearm barrel.

    • An ambidextrous charging handle for a Stoner-type firearm. The charging handle comprises two separate assemblies, these being an oblong handle that contains a latch assembly and a central shaft member. The parts are joined together by a compound pivoting arrangement in which a combination of the latch assembly and alignment grooves in the central shaft member interacting with slidingly engage a locating flange on the oblong handle, and a pair of pivoting connectors that secure the latch assembly to the oblong handle and the central shaft member independently from one another. The latch assembly includes cam activation via a retention relief cut acting against a fixed minor pivot connector. The second point of retention for the assembly is via a major pivoting connector the combination of which transmits the retraction force applied to the oblong handle on one end of the latch assembly and to the central shaft member through the interconnection of the minor pivot connector located at the proximal end of the latch body.

    • A cocking mechanism for a gun, comprising a rotary shaft, carried by the mounting and having intersecting right and lefthanded screw-threads and a coacting retractor member which, on rotation of the shaft, retracts the recoiling parts of the weapon, as a result of its interaction with one screw-thread, to cock certain mechanisms; whereafter run-out occurs under the influence of spring action accompanied by interaction between the retractor member and the reverse thread. The first screw-thread may be of slow pitch to give a mechanical advantage to the operator and the reverse thread of steeper pitch to give a mechanical advantage in favor of the springs.
