    • A torque generator steering device (10) is disclosed of the type including a gerotor displacement mechanism (19) and valving (9), by the rotation of an input shaft (1) results in a hydrostatic power assist to an output shaft (2). In parallel with the power assist path, the input shaft (1) is connected by a torsion bar (15) to a connecting shaft (3) which, in turn, is connected to the output shaft (2). The connections between the torsion bar (15) and the connecting shaft (3), and between the connecting shaft (3) and the output shaft (2) are substantially zero backlash mechanical connections, thus providing a main torque transmitting path in parallel with the power assist path. Below a predetermined level of input torque, rotation of the input shaft (1) results in an immediate and corresponding rotation of the output shaft (2), thus providing a manual steering mode.

    • A fluid-powered servo actuator having a body, an annular piston, and a shaft extending co-axially therewithin. The shaft has an interior chamber located within the body with two fluid channels extending to the chamber in which the piston is mounted. One channel communicates with each side of the piston. A valve spool is positioned in the shaft chamber, and a cam follower or threads are used to longitudinally move the valve spool therewithin in response to its selected rotation. The valve spool has a pair of valve lands which, when in a neutral position, close the two channels. When the valve spool is moved longitudinally, pressurized fluid is communicated with one or the other of the channels to cause the piston to move longitudinally. Splines or rollers convert the longitudinal movement of the piston into rotational movement of the shaft. The cam follower or threads cause the resulting rotational movement of the shaft to move the valve spool back to the neutral position when the shaft has rotated by an amount and in a direction corresponding to the selected amount and direction the valve spool was rotated.

    • A hydraulic control mechanism to control operating elements, such as a hydraulic motor, or hydraulic cylinder, employing presetting of a set point, for example via a stepping motor, and mechanical feedback of an actual value. Functional elements are provided in the form of rotary pistons that fit inside one another, rotating relative to one another, and serving for the sensitive regulation of the direction and quantity of a pressure medium stream that is supplied from a pressure medium source to the operting element and flows back therefrom to the tank. One rotary piston is positively connected with the presetting of the set point, and the other rotary piston is positively connected with the operating element for the mechanical actual value feedback. In this way, in contrast to known control mechanisms where a slide or seat valve is actuated by a longitudinal movement, the rotational movement of the set point and actual value are directly compared with one another. This results in a considerably greater precision both statically (positioning precision, concentricity) as well as dynamically (sequence trueness, path deviation). The control mechanism is a better overload safety device, has a simpler construction, and is more economical.

    • A control system for a motor through which a specific rotary output is obtained from a given input signal by controlling an operational supply of fluidic energy. The control system includes a direct mechanical servo which receives the input signal to control a rotary plate directional valve through which the operational supply of fluid is communicated to the motor. The direct mechanical servo includes a compound epicyclic gear train and an intermittent motion gear mechanism which compares the input position with the output position of the motor to establish a feedback signal which repositions the rotary valve plate directional valve to a null position when the rotary output equals that requested by the input signal. The control system further includes a regulator assembly which receives a variable reference signal to control the fluid pressure of the supply fluid. The variable reference signal which represents the work performed by the motor also passes through a relief valve. When the output torque of the motor reaches a predetermined value, the relief valve opens and a portion of the fluid supplied to the motor is vented to an exhaust conduit to protect any mechanism operated by the motor from receiving excessive torque.

    • This disclosure pertains to that class of remote rotary controls wherein an actuated rotary element situate remote from a control rotary element duplicates or reproduces the rotary action of the control element. More particularly, my present invention provides for a remote rotary following action which is infinitely variable and infinitely continuous in either direction of rotation. A rotary control head and a rotary actuator are rotatably mounted on a common base means. A cam integral to the control head sequentially actuates a plurality of pressure varying control valves as the head is rotated. Each of the control valves is duct connected to one of a plurality of linear actuators mounted on the base means. Each of the linear actuators is interconnected to an extensible and retractable fluid controlled actuator link; each actuator link is interconnected to the rotary actuator. Each linear actuator is duct connected for fluid flow through a shuttle-valve to the actuator link of an adjacent linear actuator whereby the fluid pressure in each actuator link is substantially inversely proportional to the fluid pressure in its interconnected linear actuator. Sequential actuation of the plurality of control valves by rotation of the control head causes sequential operation of each linear actuator whereby the rotary actuator reproduces the rotation of the control head.
