The poly alpha-olefin polymer can be ethylene alpha-olefin copolymer such as ethylene-1-butene or ethylene-1-butene-hydrocarbyl polyamine. Preferably, the ethylene-1-butene-hydrocarbyl polyamine has a number average molecular weight of about 3300.

摘要： Multigrade crankcase lubricants having low concentrations of chlorine and sulphated ash use multifunctional viscosity modifiers in place of conventional chlorine-containing dispersants. The lubricant contains at least 1.5 weight percent of a chlorine-containing dispersant that is a reaction product of a polyisobutenyl succinic anhydride and an organic amine, a multifunctional viscosity modifier and a detergent system that comprises a metal sulfonateand one or more metal salts of a phenolic organic acid selected from the group consisting of alkyl phenols, sulfurized alkyl phenols, and alkyl salicylic acids in an amount that provides at least 0.0025 gram equivalents of phenolic hydroxide. At least one of the metal salts is overbased and the detergent system includes not more than 0.008 gram equivalent % carbonate. The gram equivalent ratio of the total amount of phenolic hydroxide to the metal sulfonate is at least 1.4 to 1 while the gram equivalent ratio of all the organic metal salts to carbonate is at least 0.5 to 1. The lubricant contains no more than 50 ppm chlorine as determined by neutron activation analysis and no more than 1.2 wt. % sulphated ash as determined by ASTM D874.

摘要： The present invention is directed to a process for preparing a gelled overbased calcium carboxylate which involves carbonating a carboxylic acid of 8 to 30 carbon atoms in the presence of a promoter system consisting of water and an alcohol of 1 to 8 carbon atoms, such that the mole ratio of alcohol to water is substantially constant and is such that the viscosity of the reaction mixture during carbonation step does not exceed 1 pascal second (1000 centipoise). This process prevents excessive thickening of the reaction mixture in a manufacturing unit during carbonation and affords ample time to complete the process of carbonation without premature crystallization of the calcium carbonate formed during overbasing.

摘要： A grafted polyolefin containing one or more of N-vinylimidazole, 4-vinylpyridine, or other ethylenically-unsaturated nitrogen-containing or oxygen-containing graftable monomers grafted to a polyolefin copolymer is disclosed. The grafted polyolefin preferably has a weight average molecular weight of from about 20,000 to about 500,000, a polydispersity of less than about 10, and an ADT value of at least about 8. The grafted polyolefin can be defined as containing more than about 1.2% by weight of grafted monomer on a polyolefin, or as containing at least about 13 moles of graftable monomers per mole of polyolefin, or as having an asphaltene dispersancy test (ADT) value of at least about 8. Also described is a lubricating oil comprising a lubricant base oil and a grafted polyolefin as described above. Also described is a method of making a dispersant viscosity index improver. N-vinylimidazole or other ethylenically unsaturated nitrogen-containing and/or oxygen-containing graftable monomers and a graftable polyolefin are reacted with enough of an initiator to graft the monomer to the polyolefin. The initiator and/or graftable monomer is added to the other ingredients, maintained at the reaction temperature, over a period of time. The reaction temperature is maintained at a level high enough to give acceptable reaction times. The N-vinylimidazole and the initiator each can be added at a uniform, relatively slow rate during the reaction.

摘要： Process for preparing high overbased metal sulfurized alkylphenates, wherein a majority of the alkalinity is provided by at least a stoichiometric excess of metal. The process is characterized by a sulfurization reaction using a promoter, followed by overbasing with carbon dioxide, a polyamine, and additional metal base in the presence of an alkylene glycol under reactive conditions at temperatures in the range of about from 150.degree. C. to 190.degree. C. The process affords a metal sulfurized phenate product which is substantially insensitive to overcarbonation, which exhibits low corrosive wear, and which exhibits high rates of acid neutralization. These compositions are useful in the formulation of marine cylinder lubricants.

The composition is especially useful as a lubricating oil additive with viscosity index-improving effect.
