    • One aspect of the present invention relates to a label comprising both an adhesive portion and a non-adhesive portion. The adhesive portion of the label may be transparent so as not to occlude any pre-existing information on a manufacturer-supplied package once applied to the manufacturer's package. The non-adhesive portion of the label may contain bar-coded information, as well as human readable text, and may protrude from the product for the purposes of applying the bar-coded information to a previously non-bar-coded product. The label may be flexible, thus allowing the folding or rolling of the non-adhesive portion for the purposes of decreasing the storage space required for the manufacturer product that has had the new label attached and allowing the adhesive portion to conform to the product to which it is attached. Because of the rules governing abstracts, this abstract should not be used to construe the claims.

    • A method and an apparatus for weighing and labeling packages of goods are provided. Each package is supplied to an electronic scale that is connected to an electronic analyzer that contains a computer. The load carrying mechanism of the scale is embodied as a conveyor belt, the speed of which is greater during supply and withdrawal than during a weighing process. Labeling of a package is effected on the conveyor belt after conclusion of the weighing process. Disruptions of the scale, caused by vibrations resulting from conveying and labeling packages, are eliminated on the one hand by a sufficiently high dead weight of the load carrying mechanism and on the other hand by a low-pass filter that is disposed in the electronic analyzer.

    • The present invention relates to a mechanism for and method of applying labels, printing images, or scanning a feature on the surface of a substrate. The mechanism (1) comprises a read/write/apply means (4) for reading, writing or applying the information, carried and located relative to a predetermined position by a robotically actuated device. The device comprises a mounting member (5), a support member (6) relatively movable with respect to the mounting member (5) and carrying the said means (4), and at least three pairs of extendable arms (7,8,9) extending between and pivotally mounted on the members (5,6). The arrangement is such that one arm in each of said pairs of arms (7,8,9) cooperates with an arm from another pair of arms.     • The hand-held apparatus of the present invention includes an integral printer and measuring device so that measurement information obtained from the measuring device may be automatically printed, used to determine additional information to be printed such as price information, or merely displayed. A measuring wheel having detectable marks disposed about the periphery thereof is rotatably mounted on the housing of the apparatus in proximity to a sensor that detects the marks. This sensor is positioned on the housing to not only detect the marks on the measuring wheel but to also detect the presence or absence of a label dispensed from the housing so as to provide an on-demand printing mode of operation. A controller is responsive to the sensor in the on-demand mode of operation for controlling a printhead to print on a supply when the previously printed supply has been removed from the apparatus. The controller is also responsive to the sensor in a second mode of operation for counting the marks that pass the sensor as the measuring wheel is rotated when the apparatus is rolled across a dimension of an object to be measured, such as the length, width or height of the object.

    • A program generator allows a user to create a software program capable of being executed by a remote labeler to control the printing of one or more labels and to control data collection operations thereof. The program generator stores a user entered sequence of commands selected from a set of commands that control label printing and data collection operations. The stored sequence of commands is validated in accordance with the program generator such that each command entered by the user is compared to a set of allowable commands to determine whether the command is valid or not. During the validation of each of the commands, the program generator determines whether the parameters of the command define allowable data manipulation operations to be performed by the labeler. If not, the program generator provides an error message that identifies the particular command and the error associated with the command. The program generator allows various application files to be selectively linked together to form an application program. Further, when downloading an application file to a labeler, the program generator automatically determines whether the application program requires a look-up file. If so, the program generator creates the necessary look-up file.
