    • Multi-bladed disc cutter for cutting into pellets thermoplastic material extruded from a die plate of an underwater pelletizer, wherein the blades of the cutter are integrally formed on the periphery of a backplate and radially project therefrom, the sidewalls of the blades being integrally connected by shroud members to provide added strength against bending and twisting of the blades under load. Perforations are provided in the shroud members and backplate to permit passage of water to cool and flush away the cut pellets. Additionally, integrally formed blades may be arranged in concentric circles inwardly of the periphery of the backplate. The integral of the disc cutters avoids weakening and misalignment of the blades, saves space and permits a greater number of cutting edges than is possible in disc cutters wherein the blades are fastened to a hole by bolts. Casting the cutter integrally with its blades permits off-line grinding for final alignment purposes.

    • A rotary air eject die-cutting assembly utilizes an air delivery manifold having a cylindrical core portion that is fabricated of a relatively resiliently deformable material and is closely seated within the cavity of a journaled die-cutting roll. The roll has a cutting element of closed configuration on its outside surface and an aperture that extends between the cutting element and the cavity. The core portion has an interior passageway and a generally radially extending port that is positioned for registry with the aperture of the roll, permitting air to flow through the passageway and the port, and out of the aperture, upon registry of the aperture and port. This occurs intermittently as the roll rotates about the core portion which is secured in a substantially fixed position, and enables pressurized air to eject scrap that would other wise tend to build up within the cutting element. Use of a resiliently deformable core portion eliminates the need for added support and bearing members within the roll cavity; it simplifies the assembly and enhances its useful life.

Envelope or bag blanks are first held on a cutter roller 9 (Fig. 1), by suction applied to ports 101, 11 1 , 12 1 within several closed window cutting knives 10, 11, 12, and the portions cut away (by co-operation of a counter roller) are subsequently ejected by air blown from the ports. The timing of the supply of suction and pressure can be varied for each knife independently, e.g. by rotary valves 30 1 , 31 1 , 32 1 leading to the supply of suction and pressure. The position of a guide on the cutting roller for the leading edges of the blanks can be varied. The guide may comprise a blade 49 (Fig. 6, not shown), or a row of ports 38 (Fig. 1), alternately fed with suction and with pressure and carried by a sleeve 18 which can be adjusted about the circumference of the roller 9. The positions of the knives on the roller 9 are adjustable.
