    • A data storage apparatus and method that allows the signal processing circuit to be in integrated form, so that the magnetic storage system may be reduced in size with increased performance is described. The apparatus includes a reproducing head that reproduces information stored on a recording medium, a preamplifier that amplifies the output of the reproducing head, and a low-pass filter. An A/D converter converts the output for the low-pass filter to a digital signal and has a reference voltage. A discriminator is coupled to an output of the A/D converter and discriminates the digital signal. A circuit, coupled to the discriminator, provides negative feedback control of the reference voltage of the A/D converter as a function of the digital signal before the discrimination by the discriminator and the digital signal that has been discriminated by the discriminator.

    • An automatic level control circuit for a multi-level quadrature amplitude-modulated (QAM) demodulator having a QAM detector, which produces baseband in-phase (P) and quadrature (Q) signals in response to an input QAM camer wave, and two analog-digital (A/D) convertors which convert the Q and P signals into two parallel digital signals. Automatic level control of the input level of the baseband signal to the A/D convertor is maintained constant by the combination of a reference signal generator in a feed back loop with each A/D convertor. The A/D convertor produces a decoded digital signal and the reference voltage generator, in response to those signals, provides reference voltage to the A/D convertor that are optimized in response to variations in input signal level.

    • A system for providing digital data representative of a selected analog signal on the data lines of a programmable controller using a central processing unit. The system employs a conversion circuit which converts the input analog signal to digital data on output data terminals upon receipt of a conversion signal simultaneously with an analog signal and which creates a completion signal when the conversion is completed. The system can use at least two analog inputs that receive at least two analog conditions and convert a selected one of the analog conditions to an analog signal. Upon actuation of one of the input modules, the selected analog signal of the selected module is directed to the conversion circuit. After conversion, the conversion completion signal of a conversion circuit then deactivates the actuated input module for the next conversion cycle.
