    • According to one embodiment, a power supply device includes a full-wave rectifier, a power converting circuit, and a partial smoothing circuit. The power converting circuit converts an output of the full-wave rectifier into a direct-current voltage according to a switching action of a switching element. The partial smoothing circuit includes, in series, a capacitor and a first diode connected in polarity opposite to output polarity of the full-wave rectifier. The partial smoothing circuit is provided on an output side of the full-wave rectifier in parallel to the power converting circuit. In the partial smoothing circuit, the capacitor is charged according to the switching action of the switching element of the power converting circuit. The partial smoothing circuit supplies charged electric of the capacitor to the power converting circuit via the first diode in a trough portion of an output voltage of the full-wave rectifier.

In some embodiments, high power factor may be maintained over a substantial range of commanded power to the load. Certain embodiments may enhance supply efficiency by capturing and recycling inductive load energy.

    • A single stage, single switch, input-output isolated converter configuration which uses a hybrid combination of forward and flyback converters is disclosed. The converter operates at a high input power factor with a regulated DC output voltage. It makes use of a novel control scheme utilizing duty cycle control at two discrete operating frequencies. Although the invention employs two frequencies, it does not use a continuous frequency variation. This configuration has the advantage of reduced peak current stresses on the components and is specifically suited for ‘buck’ applications where low DC output voltages (e.g. 24V, 48V) are needed. This configuration will be of specific interest to industries associated with battery charging and uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems. Apart from having several competitive features compared with prior art techniques, the dual frequency operation scheme reduces the amplitude of its noise spectrum by spreading it over a wider frequency range thus making it more electromagnetic compatible.
