    • A chain tensioner includes a housing defining a cylinder chamber, and a plunger having a small-diameter end and a spring both mounted in the cylinder chamber. A register ring is fitted in a ring-receiving groove formed in the inner periphery of the cylinder chamber near its open end. A plurality of annular grooves are formed in the outer periphery of the plunger so as to be axially spaced from each other at equal intervals. The register ring is adapted to be press-fitted in one of the annular grooves. With the register ring trapped between an engaging surface of a first annular groove which is one of the annular grooves located nearest to the front end of the plunger and a locking surface of the ring-receiving groove, an outer cylindrical surface of the plunger extending forwardly from the first annular groove has its front portion supported by an inner cylindrical surface of the cylinder chamber extending forwardly from the ring-receiving groove.

    • A chain tensioner is provided, in which the design conditions of a register ring are optimized in compliance with the required functions so as to improve the durability, the operational stability and the like of the chain tensioner. A register ring is formed of a steel material having a tensile strength of 1000 to 3500 N/mm2. At the same time, an overlapping allowance of the register ring with respect to engagement grooves of a plunger is set within the range of 30 to 50% of a wire diameter of the register ring. Furthermore, a bending stress generated in the register ring when the register ring is made to slide between the engagement grooves to increase its diameter is set within the range of 500 to 1700 N/mm2.

    • A tensioning system with restoring action for tensioning a flexible drive means is provided, in particular a drive chain of an internal combustion engine, composed of a tensioning apparatus and a restoring device. The tensioning apparatus comprises a housing, a tensioning piston which is guided in a movable manner in the housing and which has a detent profiling, and a detent hook for the stepped adjustment of the working range of the tensioning piston, wherein the detent hook has a clamping region for engaging into the detent profiling in the tensioning piston. Here, a retraction stop is provided at the housing, at which retraction stop, in an abutting state of the detent hook, a further retraction movement of the tensioning piston into the housing is prevented by virtue of the clamping region being clamped on the detent profiling. The restoring device has a restoring element which is separate from the tensioning apparatus and which is received in a restoring receptacle of the tensioning apparatus and which prevents the abutment of the detent hook against the retraction stop and which, in the event of abutment of the detent hook against the restoring element and a further retraction movement of the tensioning piston, causes the clamping region to spread open and permits a restoring movement of the tensioning piston. The present system also relates to a corresponding tensioning apparatus having a restoring receptacle for receiving the restoring element.

    • A tensioning system with restoring action for tensioning a flexible drive means is provided, in particular a drive chain of an internal combustion engine, composed of a tensioning apparatus and a restoring device. The present system also relates to a corresponding tensioning apparatus having a restoring receptacle for receiving the restoring element.

    • In a chain tensioner, an expansible ring is disposed in an internal groove formed in the inner wall of a plunger-accommodating hole near an open end thereof. The ring cooperates with grooves formed on the plunger to exert a ratchet action. The relationship between the angles of the surfaces of the internal groove and the grooves on the plunger allows the plunger to protrude, restricts retraction of the plunger on start-up of a chain transmission, but allows retraction when chain tension becomes excessive. In one embodiment, in which the ring is a C-ring, the tensioner housing can be formed with external threads for mounting in a threaded hole on a timing chain cover or other engine part. In other embodiments, the ring can have externally protruding levers for manipulation of the ring.

    • The present invention is directed to decrease the impact sound of the ratchet mechanism generated at the time of piston retraction. The tensioner includes a piston 3 slidable in the piston bore 2a of the housing 2 and an expandable circlip member 5 engageable with the engagement groove 3a of the piston 3. The piston bore 2a has a guide groove 20 formed therein that has front and rear stop surfaces 20a, 20b adapted to contact the circlip member 5. The engagement groove 3a is formed by a round seat portion S0 that the circlip member 5 is adapted to seat, a piston-retraction restricting portion S0S1 that is formed on front side of the round scat portion S0 and a piston-advance permitting portion S0S2 that is formed on the front side of the round seat portion S0. The piston-retraction restricting portion S0S1 permits the circlip member 5 to travel a short distance toward the front side along the rear side stop surface 20b to allow for an enlargement of the circlip member 5 and to restrict retraction of the piston 3 when the piston 3 retracts and the circlip member 5 contacts the rear side stop surface 20b of the guide groove 20.

    • A chain tensioner includes a housing and a plunger slidably mounted in the housing. A ring receiving groove is formed in the inner periphery of the housing in which a register ring is received. The register ring is engageable in any of a plurality of circumferential grooves formed in the outer periphery of the plunger at equal axial intervals. When the plunger is pushed into the housing, the register ring is trapped between a stopper surface of the ring receiving groove and an engaging surface of one of the circumferential grooves, thereby preventing further retraction of the plunger. The register ring includes a ring portion received in the ring receiving groove and having circumferentially spaced ends, and a pair of operating pieces formed by bending the opposed ends of the ring portion to extending in the same axial direction.
