    • Digital fuel injector, injection and hydraulic valve actuation module and engine and high pressure pump methods and apparatus primarily for diesel engines. The digital fuel injectors have a plurality of intensifier actuation pistons allowing a selection of up to seven intensified fuel pressures. The disclosed engine operating methods include using at least one cylinder for a compression cylinder for providing compressed intake air to at least one combustion cylinder. A pressure sensor in each combustion cylinder may be used to indicate temperature in the combustion cylinder to limit combustion temperatures to below temperatures at which substantial NOX is generated. A re-burn cycle may be used to complete the burning of hydrocarbons, providing a very low emission engine. A compression cylinder may be provided with a pump actuated by the piston in the compression cylinder. Various aspects and embellishments of the invention are disclosed.

    • A solenoid end cap assembly having a flat mating surface. The flat mating surface is a single planar mating surface and is designed to mate with a substantially flat mating surface of a valve control body. The solenoid, housed within the solenoid end cap, does not protrude past the flat surface and may form part of the substantially flat mating surface of the solenoid end cap. The flat mating surfaces of the valve control body and the solenoid end cap assembly eliminates the need for ring dowels in the assembly between the solenoid and the valve control body. This reduces manufacturing costs and assembly time. The flat mating surfaces also provide a uniform mounting surface for the solenoid from injector to injector. This increases performance characteristics, as well as increases thermal conductivity and magnetic conductivity characteristics.

    • A booster unit is provided in an injector of a fuel injection system. The booster unit includes a booster piston accommodated in a pressure chamber, and a discharge valve capable of discharging fuel in a backpressure chamber. A needle valve drive unit includes a pressure-receiving piston and an open/close valve. A return passage is connected to a discharge side of the open/close valve. A fuel discharge passage in communication with the discharge valve is combined with the return passage in a confluence portion. A check valve is provided between the confluence portion and the open/close valve. A check valve permits the fuel discharged to the return passage from a pressurization chamber to be directed to the confluence portion, and prevents the fuel discharged to the fuel discharge passage from the backpressure chamber from being directed the open/close valve.

    • A fuel injection system for an internal combustion engine including a fuel injector which can be subjected to fuel at high pressure and is actuatable via a metering valve device by which the pressure in a pressure booster control chamber is controllable such that the pressure in a pressure booster pressure chamber, defined by a pressure booster piston, that can be filled with fuel from the high-pressure fuel source via a filling path in which a check valve is disposed and that is in communication with an injection valve member pressure chamber, is increased by the pressure booster piston such that an injection valve member opens for injecting fuel, whereupon fuel is positively displaced out of a damping chamber via a damping path, in which a damping throttle is disposed. To assure stable injection performance, the damping path is embodied such and connected in such a way to the filling path that the fuel positively displaced from the damping chamber via the damping throttle in an injection event reaches the filling path of the pressure booster pressure chamber via the damping path.
