    • The specification discloses an improved automotive type carpet construction and method for manufacture thereof. The construction disclosed is particularly useful for lining the trunk of an automobile, the bed of an automotive type station wagon, or on the floor of a van type vehicle, where it is desired to have a construction which is light in weight, waterproof, easy to clean up, and yet can be made in a color to match the interior carpeting of the automobile. The construction disclosed has a primary layer of a ribbon fiber woven in a plain weave, with a continuous filament yarn inserted with a needled motion, and a bonding layer applied to the back thereof in a continuous hot melt flow. A non-skid layer may also be applied, if desired. The carpet construction is then die cut into one or more pieces with the piece(s) being sewn together or a binding being applied thereto.

    • There is provided a polyurethane ground rubber composite and a new method for formation and preparation thereof. The composite is suitable for use in laminated and other surfacing or as a surfacing and has excellent flexibility, resiliency, weatherability, and elastomeric qualities; and comprises particulate vulcanized rubber substantially coated on each particle with about 3 to about 8 microns, and in some instances about 3 to about 10 microns, of a cross-linked binder derived from an essentially solvent-free polymeric isocyanate prepolymer having a number average molecular weight of 800-4000, the cross-linking of the isocyanate prepolymer being accomplished by controlled reaction with water using an equivalent ratio of NCO/OH of 0.14/1 to 0.83/1 to form urea and buiret linkages, and providing a void content of 25-60 volume percent, so that the carbon dioxide generated by the water/isocyanate reaction can readily diffuse through the film and so that the vented carbon dioxide does not cause foaming of the composite; and methods of controlling the forming of the composite, the layering of the composite, and/or mixing it in situ.

    • A TUFTED CARPET IS FORMED BY APPLICATION OF A LAYER OF TIXOTROPIC POLYURETHANE ADHESIVE BACKING COMPOSITION TO A PRIMARY BACKING MATERIAL SO THAT THERE IS SUBSTANTIALLY COMPLETE SATURATION OF THE BUNDLE WRAP WITHOUT PENETRATION OF THE COMPOSITION THROUGH THE PROMARY BACKING TO THE EXPOSED PORTION OF THE TUFTED MATERIAL. THE POLYURETHANE COMPOSITION IS PREPARED BY MIXING TOGETHER UNDER POLYMERIZATION CONDITIONS WATER, A POLYOL WITH A HYDROXYL NUMBER LESS THAN ONE HUNDRED, A DIISOCYANATE, A FILLER AND A CATALYST, AND OPTIONALLY A SURFACTANT. THE POLYURETHANE OBTAINED HAS A VISCOSITY OF BETWEEN 30,000 AND 100,000 CPS. AT 10 R.P.M. NO. 7 SPINDLE BROOKFIELD RVF VISCOMETER, A POT LIFE OF BETWEEN 20 TO 60 SECONDS AND IS EXPANDABLE FROM ABOUT 100 PERCENT TO ABOUT 400 PERCENT WHEN COMPLETELY REACTED. THE POLYURETHANE BACKING COMPOSITION IS APPLIED TO THE UNDERSIDE OF THE PRIMARY BACKING WITH A DOCTOR BLADE. UPON HEATING OR ALLOWING TO STAND AT ROOM TEMPERATURE, THE ADHESIVE COMPOSITION JELLS AND EXPANDS. SUBSEQUENT TO EXPANSION AND PRIOR TO CURING, COMPRESSIVE PRESSURE IS APPLIED TO THE EXPANDED POLYURETHANE BACKING COMPOSITION TO SELECTIVELY DISINTEGRATE AT LEAST A PORTION OF THE FOAMED CELLS IN THE POLYURETHANE AND OPTIONALLY FORM A PATTERN OR DESIGN.
