    • A nozzle system is provided for an injection molding machine. The nozzle system includes a nozzle tip that is removably connected to a nozzle body with a sealing and mounting sleeve element. The nozzle body includes a first connector for releasably connecting with a second connector defined on the sleeve. The sleeve element further includes an alignment bearing for engaging a bearing surface defined on the nozzle body for precisely locating the nozzle tip within the nozzle body along on a predetermined axis. Further embodiments of the invention provide a valve pin disposed in the nozzle body and nozzle tip. The valve pin includes a bearing surface for engaging a guiding surface defined on the second melt channel for aligning the end of the valve pin with a mold gate. Further embodiments also provide an integrally connected nozzle tip and sleeve element.

    • A nozzle for an injection molding apparatus is provided. The nozzle includes a nozzle body, a heater and a first gap seal surface. The nozzle body defines a nozzle body melt passage, that is adapted to be downstream from and in fluid communication with a melt source, and upstream from and in fluid communication with a gate into a mold cavity in a mold component. The heater is thermally connected to the nozzle body for heating melt in the nozzle body melt passage. The first gap seal surface is positioned on a structure that is connected at least indirectly to the nozzle body. The first gap seal surface is adapted to be separated by a gap with respect to a second gap seal surface on the mold component. The gap is sized to inhibit the flow of melt between the first gap seal surface and the second gap seal surface.

    • A three piece nozzle assembly for injecting molten plastic in an injection molding machine carrying out a high pressure, high volume continuous molding process to mold thin walled parts. A nozzle housing has an internally threaded dual diameter bore in one end which receives in one bore portion an externally threaded shank of a nozzle. A sleeve is threaded into the other bore portion and is tightened adjacent to a flange on the nozzle shank to lock the nozzle to the housing and prevent the pressure of the injection molding from working the nozzle loose from the housing. A gap is formed between the sleeve and nozzle shank to reduce the thermal effects.

    • A mold bushing for injecting plastic material into a mold cavity. The bushing member has a one-piece body member with a central passageway for a shut-off gate pin member and a separate and distinct passageway for the molten plastic material. A tip member is positioned on the end of the body member and has a material discharge chamber. A gate or orifice opened and closed by the pin member is positioned either in the tip member or the mold. A wear bushing member is positioned in the discharge chamber or the end of the body member and acts to support the end of the pin member and prevent the flow of plastic material into the central passageway. The body member is heated by an annular cast heater member or the like. The wear bushing member can be indexed for proper positioning relative to the body member and the plastic flow passageway. The wear bushing member preferably has a body portion which partially fills the discharge chamber in the tip member. In an alternate embodiment, the body member has an extension which partially fills the discharge chamber and the wear bushing is a cylindrical member positioned at the discharge end of the central passageway.

    • A modular injection nozzle system for use with hot runner injection machines employs a thermal insulating element between the tip of the injection nozzle and a removable mold gate insert. This thermal insulating element limits the heat loss from the tip to the gate insert, assists in sealing the gate area and provides assistance in aligning the gate and the nozzle during assembly. The removable mold gate insert allows for eased servicing and assembling/dis-assembling of the injection nozzle system and has limited contact with the mold plate. In one embodiment, the removable gate insert is mounted to the nozzle via the insulating member, which is in the form of a sleeve with exterior threads which are complementary to interior threads on the gate insert. The sleeve can either be press-fit onto the nozzle or can have interior threads which are complementary to exterior threads on the nozzle. In either case, the sleeve can assist in the alignment of the components of the nozzle system. In another embodiment, the insulating element also includes an gap between the nozzle tip and the gate insert, the gap having a suitable insulating gas or vacuum therein to provide additional insulation. In another embodiment, the insulating element comprises a layer of insulating material on the nozzle tip and the gate insert can either be press fit with the layer or the layer can have exterior threads can into it to engage complementary threads on the gate insert. In another embodiment, the insulating element is molded in place on the nozzle tip.
