    • A combine harvester having a rotary perforated air screen and a device operable to suck air inwardly through the air screen is disclosed wherein the rotary air screen is mounted adjacent a generally horizontal surface of the machine and is provided with a stationary impervious member in the vicinity of the generally horizontal surface to render the air screen imperforate at that location and hence allow foreign matter to fall from the air screen. An aperture is formed in the generally horizontal surface generally downstream of the rearward edge of the impervious member, as seen in the direction of rotation of the air screen. Foreign matter from the air screen and/or from remote sources which generally collect on the horizontal surface can be moved along the horizontal surface by the operation of the rotating air screen and deflected through the aperture for discharge from the combine harvester.

    • A rotary cleaning mechanism for cleaning threshed grain in a combine harvester is disclosed wherein a fan is mounted forwardly of the cleaning cylinder to blow air through the cleaning sieves to make unwanted residue airborne for discharge from the cleaning cylinder. A fan housing is provided with a first passageway to direct a flow of air through the grain being conveyed from a centrally located infeed mechanism onto a radially outwardly spaced grain pan. A second passageway is also provided in the fan housing to direct a flow of air through threshed grain being conveyed rearwardly off the grain pan onto a radially outwardly located cleaning sieve. The fan is mounted on an axis of rotation common with the cleaning cylinder and forwardly of the infeed housing, which includes an eliptically shaped infeed chute to aerodynamically permit the flow of air therearound to clean threshed grain on the cleaning cylinder immediately adjacent thereto. Deflector plates are provided within the second passageway to distribute the flow of air along the axial length of the cleaning cylinder, with a more concentrated flow of air being directed at the forward end thereof.

    • In a cleaning device for threshed crop material, the material is introduced into the upstream end of a drum by a coaxial auger feeder. An air flow whirling around the inner wall of the drum is created by a tangentially connected blower. Heavier fractions of the crop material (grain) tend to be flung against the drum wall and leave through grates into a closed conveyor system, creating dynamic air pressure in the drum. Chaff and straw tend to be held in vortex towards the central core of the drum and are discharged axially through the downstream end of the drum. Various alternative embodiments with multiple blowers, multiple air inlets into the drum, recirculation of the cleaning air, finger rakes in various dispositions inside the drum, crop material fed through the blower delivery duct and adjustable baffles for controlling air flow entering the drum are described.

    • In a rotary separator, cylindrical threshing, frusto-conical separating, and centrifugal fan sections are arranged coaxially and in tandem. A fixed grate including threshing and separating portions surrounds and generally conforms to a rotor profile. A frusto-conical collector housing encloses the forward part of the separator and feeds threshed and separated grain to a grain cleaning unit, the screen elements of which, along with the collector housing, rotate concentricaly with the grate while at the same time reciprocating axially. A stationary cylindrical housing surrounds the cleaner unit and clean grain and tailings pass centrifugally from the cleaner screens to separate annular channels, to be swept around the inside of the housing by paddles moving with the cleaner elements to tangential discharge points near the top of the separator for transfer to clean grain and tailings return augers respectively. The centrifugal fan draws air approximately axially through the cleaner unit removing chaff and other light material and also receives straw carried over the grate, for discharge downwards from the fan housing.

    • An apparatus is provided for receiving, separating, distributing, and conveying mixture of materials, such as a mixture of grain, straw and chaff, in a manner that separates small particles of one kind, such as grain, from the rest of the mixture. Inner and outer co-axially aligned cylinders are mounted about a central longitudinally extending drive shaft. The inner cylinder has a generally solid wall and the outer cylinder is foraminous with a plurality of spiral guides mounted on its interior and exterior surfaces. A plurality of discs are mounted at spaced intervals along the shaft within the inner cylinder with the plane of each disc oriented at a non-right angle with respect to the axis of the shaft. A ring is mounted on the periphery of each disc and is adapted for rotation relative thereto. Tines project at circumferentially spaced locations from each ring through elongated apertures in the inner cylinder into the annular space defined between the exterior of the inner cylinder and the interior of the outer cylinder. The drive shaft may be rotated by a suitable drive means and the inner and outer cylinders may also be rotated in the same or opposite directions by the same or different drive means. In operation, the material, such as a mixture of grain, straw and chaff, is fed into the annular space between the inner and outer cylinders and conveyed axially therealong between the two cylinders where it is agitated by the projecting tines whereby the grain particles fall through the holes in the foraminous outer cylinder and whereby the chaff and straw are retained within the outer cylinder until they are discharged from the cylinder at the end opposite the feed end. The grain particles passing through the foraminous cylinder are collected in a suitable collecting trough which is spaced from, and partially or completely encloses, the outer cylinder.

    • This invention relates to a combined threshing machine and rotary separator for grain crops. The threshing and separator sections are disposed in axial alignment, with the proximal ends in substantial overlapping relation. Straw disposal means is located adjacent the distal end of the rotary separator section. Grain is removed on a conveyor at the bottom of the threshing section adjacent the proximal end of the separator. A blower is located below the conveyor outlet. The rotary separator section comprises three concentric cylindrical shells rigidly connected together for unitary rotation, the innermost shell being wholly perforated and provided with tumbling louvers on its inner surface. The intermediate shell is partially perforated and provided with deflecting louvers oriented to move threshed materials towards the perforated portion. The outermost shell is imperforate and has louvers on its inner surface oriented to move grains towards the blower and the grain trough disposed below the bottom side of the end of the outermost shell adjacent to the blower.
