    • An installation for mining non-carbonaceous minerals which has a longwall conveyor as used in coal mining workings, support chocks connected to the conveyor via shifting rams and a plough guided for movement along the conveyor. Each support chock has allocated thereto a heating device which is displaceable in relation to the conveyor. The heating devices are collectively used to heat a mineral face which is to be mined and the devices are moved from a position adjacent the face in order to allow the plough to proceed along the conveyor to detach the pre-heated mineral in known manner. Various measures are adopted to enable the installation to cope with the high ambient temperatures produced by the heating devices.

    • A cutting apparatus primarily for use in mining work and having an arm pivotably supported in a base housing for swinging upwardly and downwardly. The arm has cutting devices supported for rotation on a shaft at its free end and this shaft is coupled with a chain disposed within the arm to a further shaft at the lower end of the arm. The further shaft is connected to the output shaft of a drive motor and the axes of the shafts are aligned with the axis of pivoting of the arm. The drive motor has its own housing supported on an outer ring. This outer ring is in turn mounted for rotation on an inner ring accommodated in a side wall of the base housing. This inner ring is, in turn, connected to the arm. A projection of the housing of the motor engages a stop member to prevent rotation of the housing itself relative to the base housing and apart from this there is no contact between the motor and the base housing.

    • A pressure fluid drive system for supplying pressure fluid to a number of different hydraulically-operated appliances in a mine working. The system employs two hydraulically interconnected pump units each having one or more pumps providing a plurality of pressure fluid outlets and a vessel containing a supply of pressure fluid for the pumps. Each of the outlets from the pumps is available for independently driving one of the appliances. One of the units has an additional pump used to circulate pressure fluid between the vessels of the pump units; the vessels of the units being directly interconnected via a conduit. Each pump unit has a device for cooling the fluid in the vessel and there is also provided a device for removing air from the fluid returned to the vessel of one of the units.

    • A mineral mining installation with a longwall scraper-chain conveyor having a chain at one side for driving a mineral winning machine. The conveyor is detachably affixed at one end to a frame of a drive station for the chain. The drive station has a frame attached to the conveyor which frame has a top wall which is provided on its underside with two guide tubes. These guide tubes slidably support a constructional unit composed of a drive motor and gearing. The gearing has an output shaft which carries a sprocket wheel engaged with the chain and disposed close to the floor of the working. The upper and lower runs of the chain are guided onto the sprocket wheel with little or no angular deviation from their normal rectilinear course parallel to the conveyor. A piston and cylinder device is used for displacing the unit along the guide tubes to vary the tension in the chain.

    • A mineral mining installation with a multi-section conveyor on which is guided a plough provided with a sword plate. The conveyor channel sections each have two E-shaped members attached to a barrier plate which is in turn connected to the goaf side of the conveyor. A narrow gap is produced between these two members: which members define upper and lower guide passages for a chain used to drive the plough. The sword plate extends through a gap formed between the lower ends of the conveyor and the members. The outer face of each of the members has ribs thereon for connection with shifting rams and the central limb of each member projecting towards the conveyor is of hollow reinforced construction. These webs can be detachable from the remainder of the members.

    • A mineral mining installation composed of a plough movable along a multi-section conveyor. The plough is constructed from an elongate beam supported in parallelism with and above the mineral face side of the conveyor. The beam is supported at its ends by means of a combination of rigid columns and cutter bit carriers pivotably attached to the beam. The cutter bit carriers engage a guide rail at the mineral face side of the conveyor and the columns are in turn supported on the carriers. The beam and carriers form a parallelogram-type linkage with the guide rail and the carriers pivot to a limited extent as the plough is moved along the conveyor. A further support means extends from the beam over the conveyor and is guided at the goaf side of the conveyor where a drive chain is provided. Sets of cutter bits are attached to the columns and the beam as well as to the cutter bit carriers.
