摘要： A thin-film magnetic head is constructed such that a main magnetic pole layer, a write shield layer, a gap layer, a thin-film coil and a shield magnetic layer are laminated on a substrate. The thin-film magnetic head has a shield magnetic layer. This thin-film magnetic head has a hard guard frame layer surrounding an equidistant coil part, disposed at a position equidistant from the substrate, from outside and being in direct contact with almost a whole outside surface defining an outer shape of the equidistant coil part.

摘要： A near-field light generator includes a waveguide and a plasmon generator. The waveguide has a core and a cladding. The core has first and second evanescent light generating surfaces disposed such that the plasmon generator is interposed therebetween. The plasmon generator has an outer surface, the outer surface including: a front end face; a first plasmon exciting part that is opposed to the first evanescent light generating surface with a predetermined spacing therebetween; and a second plasmon exciting part that is opposed to the second evanescent light generating surface with a predetermined spacing therebetween.

A distance from the top surface of the substrate to any given point on each of the first and second portions decreases with increasing distance from the given point to the medium facing surface. The second portion has an angle of inclination greater than that of the first portion with respect to a direction perpendicular to the medium facing surface. A distance from the top surface of the substrate to any given point on each of the fourth and fifth portions increases with increasing distance from the given point to the medium facing surface. The fifth portion has an angle of inclination greater than that of the fourth portion with respect to the direction perpendicular to the medium facing surface.

摘要： A magnetic head with a main pole is provided. The main pole has a bottom end including an inclined portion. A write shield has a first inclined surface opposed to the inclined portion and a second inclined surface that is located farther from a medium facing surface than is the first inclined surface. The first inclined surface has a first end located in the medium facing surface and a second end opposite thereto. The second inclined surface has a third end connected to the second end and a fourth end opposite thereto. The second inclined surface forms a greater angle than does the first inclined surface relative to a direction perpendicular to the medium facing surface. The distance between the main pole and an arbitrary point on the second inclined surface increases with decreasing distance between the arbitrary point and the fourth end.

摘要： A method of taper-etching a layer to be etched that is made of a dielectric material and has a top surface. The method includes the steps of: forming an etching mask with an opening on the top surface of the layer to be etched; and taper-etching a portion of the layer to be etched, the portion being exposed from the opening, by reactive ion etching so that a groove having two wall faces intersecting at a predetermined angle is formed in the layer to be etched. The step of taper-etching employs an etching gas containing a first gas contributing to the etching of the layer to be etched and a second gas contributing to the deposition of a sidewall protective film, and changes, during the step, the ratio of the flow rate of the second gas to the flow rate of the first gas so that the ratio increases.
