    • Modified rubber compositions are described which comprise at least one polymer rubber containing carbon-carbon unsaturation, at least one aromatic furazan oxide, and at least one hydrocarbon-soluble transition metal salt. When a transition metal salt is included in such polymer rubber formulations containing aromatic furazan oxides, the undesirable odors which normally characteristic of such rubber formulations is diminished or eliminated without significantly reducing the other desirable characteristics of the vulcanized rubbers. For example, filled vulcanizates made by vulcanizing mixtures in accordance with the invention exhibit high rebound, and tires which are formulated to include at least a portion of the cured vulcanizates in the tread exhibit reduced rolling resistance. Preferably, the hydrocarbon-soluble transition metal salts are the aliphatic or alicyclic monocarboxylic acid salts or cobalt, iron, nickel or manganese.

    • Modified rubber compositions are described which when cured exhibit high rebound and reduced hysteresis. The uncured rubber compositions are prepared by reacting (a) at least one polymer rubber containing an alkali metal and carbon-carbon unsaturation with (b) at least one aromatic six-membered heterocyclic nitrogen-containing compound substituted with a group capable of reacting with the alkali metal of the polymer rubber. Filled vulcanizates made by vulcanizing a composition comprising at least one of the above-described uncured modified rubber compositions and one or more reinforcing fillers also are described. When tire treads are prepared utilizing the filled vulcanizates of the present invention, the tires exhibit improved properties such as reduced running temperature and rolling resistance.

When vulcanizates are prepared from such uncured rubber compositions, particularly when the carbon black used therein has an average surface area of at least about 20 m.sup.2 /g, the vulcanizates exhibit reduced low strain hysteresis and exhibit no significant undesirable odor.In another aspect of the invention, a filled vulcanizate made by vulcanizing uncured compositions of the type described above and containing a filler, particularly carbon black, is improved in filler interaction, hysteresis, modulus, compression set and resiliency. Rubber articles and portions thereof made from such vulcanizates such as tires, hoses, belts, springs, treads, sidewalls, and the like can be made utilizing the improved filled vulcanizates of the invention.

    • Poly(aryloxyphosphazene) copolymers are prepared having randomly repeating units represented by the formula: ##STR1## wherein R and R.sup.1 may be the same or different and are selected from the group consisting of monovalent aryl radicals and substituted aryl radicals having the structure: ##STR2## wherein X is a substituent selected from the group consisting of alkyl, alkoxy, aryl, aryloxy, amino and halogen substituted on any sterically permissible position on the phenyl group; and wherein the amount of Cl present in the form of P-Cl bonds is from about 0.4 percent to about 10 percent by weight based upon the total weight of copolymer.The copolymers may contain minor proportions of randomly distributed units in addition to the repeating units described above, these additional units containing reactive sites enabling the properties of the copolymers to be modified by crosslinking and/or curing.The copolymers are elastomeric even in the absence of low molecular weight polyphosphazene oils. The copolymers are curable by a variety of curing agents such as sulfur and peroxides, and can also be cured by radiation and ultraviolet light. The copolymers may be utilized in various applications such as foams and coatings, and are particularly suited for use in wire coating formulations.

    • The production of phosphazene polymers represented by the general formula ##STR1## WHEREIN R and R' are organic radicals hereinafter defined, and wherein n is an integer from 20 to upwards of 50,000 wherein one or more kinds of OR or OR' groups is attached to the phosphorus atoms in a substantially linear chain of alternating P and N atoms, the groups when more than one group is present being randomly distributed along the PN backbone, as described in copending United States Patent Application Ser. No. 824,004 filed Aug. 12, 1977, is enhanced by an improved procedure for the separation of the sodium chloride by-product from the derivatized phosphazene polymer. By treating the reaction mixture with carbon dioxide, in the presence of water and preferably with an additional alkali metal salt, agglomeration of the sodium chloride is accomplished, and a clean separation of the NaCl from the polyphosphazene ester is more readily achieved.

    • A process for interpolymerizing a vinyl aromatic hydrocarbon polymer and a block polymer is disclosed. The process includes the following steps: (a) forming a block polymer precursor of at least one polymeric block containing conjugated diene monomer contributed units in the presence of an anionic initiator and in an inert diluent, the block polymer precursor having living ends; and (b) thereafter adding to the block polymer precursor a charge of a vinyl aromatic hydrocarbon monomer and an additional charge of an anionic initiator to simultaneously form (1) a block polymer having a terminal block formed from the charge of vinyl aromatic hydrocarbon monomer attached to the block polymer precursor and (2) a poly(vinyl aromatic hydrocarbon) polymer interpolymerized with the block polymer. The practice of this process produces a vinyl aromatic hydrocarbon block terminated block polymer, such as SBS, interpolymerized with a polymer formed from vinyl aromatic hydrocarbon monomer, such as polystyrene. The resultant interpolymer has a high Gardner Impact Strength and good processability.
