    • An arc tube body 20 and a foil such as molybdenum foil 30 are joined with each other such that a compressive stress of 105 N/m2 or more remains at an ordinary temperature in the arc tube body 20 along a junction surface. The compressive stress is always generated on the arc tube body 20 even if a fluctuation in the stress is caused on the junction surface by the repetition of the ON/OFF of the arc tube (or a tensile stress is caused to have a very small value even if the compressive stress and the tensile stress are alternately generated). Thus, the junction strength of both members may be increased. In one embodiment, a plurality of cracks (intercrystalline cracks) may be generated on the molybdenum foil 30 by a high pressure acting during pinch seal, and quartz glass is caused to enter the cracks so that the junction strength of both members can be increased.

    • An arc tube, which is capable of prolonging the life thereof by preventing occurrence of a leak caused from a crack of an arc-tube body, has the average surface roughness of each of outer surfaces 26Aa and 26Ba of tungsten electrodes 26A and 26B pinch-sealed to pinch seal portions 20b1 and 20b2 on the two sides of a light-emission tube 20a of an arc-tube body 20 is set to be 3 μm or smaller. Thus, the state of pinch-sealing of the tungsten electrodes 26A and 26B to the pinch seal portions 20b1 and 20b2 is brought to a state in which the two elements are engaged with small pits and projections. Therefore, great compressive stress is not left in the region adjacent to the joint surface between the pinch seal portions 20b1 and 20b2 and the tungsten electrodes 26A and 26B as distinct from the conventional structure. In a case where a crack of the arc-tube body 20 is formed owing to the residual compressive stress, the crack is limited to a local portion which is the region adjacent to the joint surface. As a result, the crack is not enlarged to reach the surface of the arc-tube body 20.

    • In the manufacture of arc tubes for use as light sources of vehicle headlamps, there is first prepared a semifinished arc tube by inserting one electrode assembly into a tubular glass envelope through one end thereof and by sealing this end. The semifinished arc tube is then placed in communication with a hermetically enclosed space filled with argon under pressure, with the consequent introduction of the inert gas into the glass envelope through a second end thereof. Another electrode assembly and chemicals such as a metal halide and mercury are then introduced from the enclosed space into the semifinished arc tube through the second end, totally without contact with the atmospheric air. Then, with the glass envelope placed out of communication with the enclosed space, the argon is exhausted from within the envelope, and xenon is charged instead into the envelope through the second end, which is closed subsequently.

    • An arc tube for a discharge lamp unit which emits light which is suitable in luminous flux, color temperature, and chromaticity. The arc tube is composed of a closed glass ball in which electrodes confront one another and which is sealingly charged with light emitting materials, namely, mercury and a metal iodide of NaI and ScI.sub.3 groups together with Xe inert gas. In accordance with the invention, the closed glass ball has a volume of 20 to 50 .mu.l, the density of the mercury in the closed glass ball is in a range of 2.times.10.sup.-2 to 4.times.10.sup.-2 mg/.mu.l, the density of the metal iodide is in a range of 6.times.10.sup.-3 to 12.times.10.sup.-3 mg/.mu.l, and the charged Xe gas pressure is 3 to 6 atm. These ranges make it possible to readily manufacture on a large scale arc tubes which are substantially equal in performance, being substantially uniform in tube voltage, luminous flux, color temperature and chromaticity.
