Drain electrodes of the thin film transistors are connected to drain signal lines, and source electrodes of the thin film transistors are connected to the pixel electrodes.

    • To provide a liquid crystal display device to suitably perform color balance adjustment. For this, the liquid crystal display device includes pixel regions each including a light reflection portion and a light transmission portion on a liquid-crystal-side surface of one substrate out of respective substrates arranged to face each other in an opposed manner while sandwiching liquid crystal therebetween, wherein color filters are formed in pixel regions on a liquid-crystal-side surface of the other substrate out of the respective substrates, and each color filter is provided with an opening or notch at a part of a portion facing the light reflection portion in an opposed manner, material layers having a layer thickness substantially equal to a height of step generated by the color filters in regions facing the opening or notch of each color filter in an opposed manner on the liquid-crystal-side surface of one substrate.

    • The manufacturing yield of transflective liquid crystal display devices is to be enhanced. In a transflective liquid crystal display device including a liquid crystal display panel having a pair of substrates and a liquid crystal layer held between the pair of substrates, the liquid crystal display panel has a plurality of subpixels each having a transmissive part and a reflective part, wherein one of the pair of substrates has: an active element; a first insulating film disposed in a higher layer than the electrode of the active element and having a first contact hole; a counter electrode disposed in a higher layer than the first insulating film; a reflective electrode disposed in the reflective part in a higher layer than the counter electrode; a second insulating film disposed in a higher layer than the counter electrode and the reflective electrode and having a second contact hole; a pixel electrode disposed in a higher layer than the second insulating film; and an electroconductor formed in the first contact hole and electrically connected to the electrode of the active element, and the pixel electrode is electrically connected to the electroconductor via the second contact hole.

    • There is disclosed a transflective liquid crystal display device having reflective portions having an improved contrast ratio. At each subpixel of the display device, a pixel electrode is shared between transmissive and reflective portions. Independent counter electrodes are used respectively for the transmissive and reflective portions. Different potentials are applied to the counter electrodes for the transmissive and reflective portions. The transmissive portion operates in normally black mode. That is, the transmissive portion displays black when no voltage is applied. The reflective portion operates in normally white mode. That is, the reflective portion displays white when no voltage is applied. The liquid crystal layer in the reflective portion is thicker than the liquid crystal layer in the transmissive portion.
