    • A method is provided for embedding dispersed miniature security marks within documents and images, utilizing a mark parameters database, graphical user interface, and detection simulator. The method includes predicting detection error rates for each pixel location of a host image, defined as a digital representation of at least one recipient of the dispersed miniature security marks, with each dispersed miniature security mark including a plurality of scattered dots. The detection error rates for each pixel are displayed with the host image on a graphical user interface and the desired dispersed miniature security mark locations are selected. At least one set of dispersed miniature security mark parameters is identified, with the parameters being mark parameters that enable determination of an optimized balance between detectability and visibility of the dispersed miniature security marks. The host image with the dispersed miniature security mark is displayed for review and adjustment by an operator.

    • This invention relates to a method and apparatus for segmenting an image using a combination of image segmentation techniques. More particularly, the invention is directed to an improved image segmentation technique for use in an image processing system that performs at least two distinct image segmentation processes on an image and combines the results to obtain a combined multi-layer representation of the image that can be suitably processed. In a specific example, a block based segmentation technique is performed on an image to generate a MRC (mixed raster content) representation—having foreground, background and selector layers. A pixel based segmentation technique is also performed on the image to generate rendering hints. The MRC representation and the rendering hints are then combined to obtain a four (4) layer representation of the image. The four layer representation is subsequently processed as required by the image processing system, e.g. compressed and stored.

    • A period-based method for converting digital image data for a plurality of pixels from a first bit depth to a second bit depth includes receiving an input scanline of an arbitrary length comprising digital image data for a plurality of input image pixels. Each of the input image pixels is defined at the first bit depth. The input scanline is divided into a plurality of periods each comprising digital image data for a select number of input image pixels. The period is selected so that the image data for the select number of input image pixels exactly comprises m bytes when defined at the first bit depth and exactly comprises n bytes when defined at the second bit depth, wherein m and n are different integers. For each of the periods in succession, the image data for each of the select number of input image pixels is converted from the first bit depth to the second bit depth. A code generator generates hard-coded conversion operating instructions and a look-up table for specified bit conversion operations and generic conversion operating instructions for all other bit conversion operations.
