    • It is an object of the present invention to allow a specified function to be readily selected in a mobile telephone or the like without performing a complicated operation. A liquid crystal (30) is sandwiched between a TFT substrate (10) and a color filter substrate (20). A photosensor TFT (130) for selecting the function is disposed on the periphery of an effective screen of the TFT substrate (10). A window (24) is provided in a portion of the color filter substrate corresponding to the photosensor TFT (130), and the outside light is blocked as a result of the user touching a finger to the window. A signal from the photosensor is used for selecting the function. A correction sensor TFT (133) is disposed adjacent to the photosensor TFT (130), to thereby eliminating noise caused by the temperature distribution, stray light, or the like, and erroneous operation of the photosensoris prevented.

    • In a display device used in a compact mobile apparatus that uses a battery or the like as the poser supply, the display device consumes less power even when the display state is not switched for a long period of time. A memory element is provided in each pixel, but the number of the parts does not increase and the aperture ratio is maintained at a high level.A low power-consumption liquid crystal display device is achieved by providing the memory element in each pixel and transferring no image signal. The voltage held in the pixel memory in the liquid crystal display panel is used to generate an alternating drive signal in the pixel. Even when the image signal is not rewritten, the alternating drive avoids liquid crystal degradation and performs display operations. The simply configured memory element allows a liquid crystal display device without aperture ratio penalty to be achieved.

    • The present invention provides a liquid crystal display device which can recover a charge stored in a liquid crystal display panel without using an exteriorly mounted part such as a coil thus achieving the low power consumption. A display device includes a liquid crystal display panel having a plurality of pixels, a plurality of video lines which apply a video voltage to the plurality of pixels, and a drive circuit which supplies the video voltage to the plurality of video lines. In such a display device, the liquid crystal display panel has a common electrode to which a first voltage and a second voltage having a potential higher than a potential of the first voltage are alternately applied. The liquid crystal display panel further includes a charge recovering circuit which is connected between the respective video lines and a power source line and recovers charge when a voltage applied to the common electrode is changed over from the first voltage to the second voltage or when the voltage applied to the common electrode is changed over from the second voltage to the first voltage.
