    • A controllable, multi-mode, bi-directional overrunning clutch assembly and a shift system adapted for use in a transfer case for transferring drive torque from a primary output shaft to a secondary output shaft so as to establish a four-wheel drive mode. The clutch assembly includes a first ring journalled on a first rotary member, a second ring fixed to a second rotary member, and a plurality of rollers disposed in opposed cam tracks formed between the first and second rings. The first ring is split to define an actuation channel between its end segments. A cam rod is moveable between positions engaged with and released from one or both end segments of the split first ring. The shift system includes a mode fork which controls movement of the cam rod for establishing four distinct operational modes.

    • A shift apparatus for shifting a transfer case between a High-Range operating mode and a Low-Range operating mode. The shift apparatus includes a sector plate supported within the transfer case for rotation about an axis. A range pin member extends into a range slot formed in the sector plate. The range pin member is adapted to move a first shift fork in response to selective rotation of the sector plate between first and second positions corresponding to the High-Range operating mode and the Low-Range operating mode of the transfer case. The range slot has a first camming edge provided for moving the range pin and first shift fork toward the first position upon rotation of the sector plate in a first direction, and a second camming edge for moving the range pin and first shift fork toward the second position in response to rotation of the sector plate in a second direction. According to the present invention, the first and second camming edges are dissimilar for causing different axial force characteristics to be exerted on the range pin member during movement thereof between the first and second positions in response to the direction of rotation of the sector plate.

    • The present invention provides a motor vehicle cold shift assist system for selectively actuating an axle connecting mechanism to automatically connect the non-driven wheels to its associated axle drive mechanism immediately following synchronization for counteracting the inertial loading acting on the transfer case synchronizer clutch mechanism. The axle connecting mechanism is actuated prior to the transfer case being locked in the four-wheel drive mode. As such, the present invention substantially reduces the shift resistance and gear clash encountered upon the vehicle operator shifting into the four-wheel drive mode during cold weather conditions.

    • A transfer case for a four wheel drive vehicle providing a central shaft defining a first output concentrically surrounded by a forward high/low drive range gear set and an aft dual planetary inter-axle differential gear set. A range clutch collar is disposed between the gear sets for selectively providing four wheel drive low range, neutral, and full-time four wheel drive high range. Likewise, a mode sleeve is disposed between the gear sets for selectively locking the differential gear set when the vehicle is shifted into its four wheel low range. Inner and outer relatively rotational drum housings surrounded the aft dual planetary differential gear set for defining an annular viscous fluid coupling chamber therebetween. The inner drum is formed with internal annulus gear teeth meshed with a portion of the dual planetary gear set for rotation with the first output shaft while the outer drum is interconnected to a second output for providing full-time four wheel drive differentiation with limited slip between the first and second outputs.
