    • An optical system has a convertible focal length. A positive lens system having a positive refractive power is supplemented by a negative lens system having a negative refractive power between said positive lens system and an image plane to convert the focal length. The front principal point of the aforesaid negative lens system thereby assumes a position rearwardly of the rear principal point thereof, and is made to lie rearwardly of the rear principal point of the aforesaid positive lens system. The overall length of the aforesaid negative lens system is longer than 0.1 times but shorter than 0.5 times the back focus of the aforesaid positive lens system.

    • In the wide angle zoom lens disclosed, a first lens group of positive refractive power is stationary during zooming, but movable for focusing and consists of four elements forming three members, namely from front to rear, a cemented lens and two positive lenses, all three in meniscus form with convex curvature toward the front, and with the cemented lens being almost afocal with its cemented surface divergent and convex toward the front. A second lens group of negative refractive power is movable for changing the magnification and consists of four elements, namely, from front to rear, two negative meniscus lenses of forward convixity, a bi-concave negative lens and a positive lens, with the bi-concave negative lens and the positive lens defining an air space having a converging effect. A third lens group is movable for maintaining a constant image plane as the second group moves to effect a change in magnification, and a fourth lens group positioned in the rear of the third group is stationary during zooming.

    • An optically compensated zoom lens particularly suited for use in a still camera. This lens system comprises positive first, negative second and positive third lens groups counting from the front of which the first and third ones are axially movable in fixedly spaced relation to each other during zooming, while the second one remains stationary together with a relay lens group that follows the third lens group, the relay lens group consisting of a negative lens with its front surface of strong divergence, and bi-convex, bi-concave and bi-convex lenses. In said first and said second lens groups, there are provided individual divergent contact surfaces configured in opposite direction of curvature to each other so as to facilitate good correction of astigmatism and distortion. For high grade imaging performance throughout the entire range of magnification, the shift of focal plane with zooming is limited within the depth of focus by fulfilling the following relationships for the three lens groups in the zoom portion:(1) 0.97 Ft
