    • The present invention provides a small projection type display apparatus capable of suppressing an optical path of incident light and an optical path of output light in a reflection type light valve from being overlapped with each other and obtaining a projected image of high quality; a rear projector and a multi-vision system using the same. The projection type display apparatus is composed of an illumination optical system 2 for collecting light radiated from a light source 1 to form illumination light, a reflection type light valve 6 for reflecting the illumination light to output modulated light forming an optical image, a projection lens system 7 for projecting an optical image formed by the reflection type light valve, and a lens element 5 with a positive power. The lens element 5 is composed of one plano-convex lens, and is placed between the reflection type light valve and the projection lens system with a convex surface directed to the projection lens system, in such a manner that the illumination light passes through the lens element to illuminate the reflection type light valve, and the modulated light output from the reflection type light valve passes through the lens element to be incident upon the projection lens system.

    • A pneumatic tire having two main grooves in the tread that are provided symmetrically with the equatorial plane of the pneumatic tire and which extend in the circumferential direction of the pneumatic tire. The tread is divided into a central portion formed between the main grooves and shoulder portions formed outward of the main grooves in the direction of tire's width. Each of the central and shoulder portions is provided with a plurality of lateral grooves that extend in the direction of tire's width.     • In an optical system phase device such as .lambda./2 plate or a .lambda./4 plate is used to convert S polarization to P polarization and vice versa. In the projection display, a white light emitted from a light source is separated by a color separation optical system, including dichroic mirrors or a dichroic prism, into three primary colors which are modulated by optical modulation elements. Then, the modulated lights are synthesized by a color synthesis optical system and projected by a projection element onto a screen. When appropriate plates are inserted appropriately in the optical system of the projection display, the conversion between S and P polarization occurs and an optical bandwidth becomes narrow, and color purity can be improved. A thick transparent plate is preferably adhered to the optical modulation element. A light absorption film is applied to an ineffective plane of the transparent plate. The phase device is preferably inserted between an optical modulation element and a transparent plate or the like to improve contrast. The invention can be applied to liquid crystal panels such as liquid crystal/resin display panels, light beam writing type display panel or micro mirror display panel. Preferably, the phase device is set to be rotatable so as to adjust contrast appropriately.
