    • A wireless system for self-service shopping is described that includes a customer identification device with an optically readable code, a portable terminal that includes an optical code reader, a local area radio, a terminal controller, and a locking mechanism, a master station, consisting of a master controller and a master radio, and a receiving rack for the portable terminals to which the scanners may be locked using the locking mechanism. A customer presents his or her identification device to a terminal which reads the code, the code is transferred by radio to the master controller which checks the identification and, if valid, sends an authorized signal by radio to the terminal to unlock the scanner. In addition, several locking mechanisms are described that are controlled by the terminal controller. An additional feature provides a shopping cart with a receiving cradle for a portable terminal that allows the customer to lock the scanner onto the cart for hands-free shopping.

    • The present invention relates to a personal shopping system for combined use in both the home of a user and a shopping establishment. The system includes a host computer which is coupled to a host modem and, optionally, to at least one wireless multi-access point. At least one shopping establishment kiosk cradle is employed to interface with a portable terminal which is also part of the system. The portable terminal can be used in both the shopping establishment and the home of the user. It is configured to read bar codes associated with items related to shopping, and includes a memory, a bar code reader, a wireless transceiver, and a data interface. The data interface of the terminal communicates with a data interface of the shopping establishment kiosk cradle. A home cradle for the portable terminal is also provided and is adapted to remain in the home of the user. It includes a home portable terminal-receiving station and a home data interface to communicate with the data interface of the portable terminal. A home data transfer circuit is also included to permit data exchange between the home data interface and the modem coupled to the host computer. The portable terminal can be provided with unique identifying indicia so that the terminal can serve as a form of identification for a user of the system. Database management of shopping lists for multiple establishments, including customer preferences, can be performed.

    • Disclosed is the implementation of a statistical basis for use in a self-scanning checkout system for determining how many items to check in a shopper's shopping cart for incorrect or missing scans as well as which particular or types of items to check to determine if they were properly scanned by a shopper who may use a portable scanner or scanning terminal to scan bar codes on selected items. In the present invention, every or nearly every shopper will be checked by a cashier or security guard, but only a limited and select number of items will be checked for each shopper. The present methodology determines how many items to check for a given shopper as well as which particular items to check for that shopper. The following factors may be considered, alone or in varying combinations, in determining the number of items to check for a particular shopping transaction: shopper frequency (the number of times the shopper has visited that store); queue length (the length of the checkout line at that time); prior history (check more items if the shopper has had errors in the past, check less items if the shopper has had no errors in the past); store location (check more items in stores located in areas with a high risk of pilferage); time of day, day of week, date of year (determine if pilferage more likely at certain times of day or year); number of times items are returned to shelf during shopping; and dwell time between scans.
