    • Mechanical and adhesive charged blind fasteners have an annular one way flat or O-ring seal mounted at one end of a cylindrical rivet body sealingly engaged with an axially extending mandrel stem to provide a torodial chamber. The body has radial adhesive-extruding openings therethrough around which a vacuum may be established for initial adhesive charging purposes. For charging, the seal is deflected by the force of a flow of adhesive from a supply responding to the establishment of a positive pressure differential between the supply and the exterior of the body. With the torodial chamber opened, viscous adhesive readily flows therein from the supply. After being filled, the vacuum is terminated and the seal naturally recovers and closes the body to confine the adhesive therein. Adhesive charging can be achieved by other mechanisms that impress a load on the supply to effect seal opening.

    • A friction stir rivet is rotated and driven through a first fusible workpiece into an engaged second fusible workpiece, causing local portions of the first and second workpieces to plasticize. A slideable cap contacts the exposed surface of the first workpiece shortly after the process begins. The cap acts as a retaining element limiting plasticized material from escaping during the process. As the rivet is further driven into the members the cap slides up the rivet and actuates an angled stirring member to increase the stir radius around the body of the rivet. Once the rivet is driven into the first and second workpieces, rotation is stopped and the plasticized material cools and hardens around the rivet, creating a weld joining the workpieces and encompassing the rivet, which provides additional mechanical strength.

    • A method and apparatus are provided for loosely attaching blind rivets to components of an assembly. The method includes attaching a rivet to an assembly while positioning the head at a predetermined clearance away from the adjacent one of the assembly components. One or both of the aligned openings in the components may be enlarged to leave radial clearance between the assembled rivet body and the enlarged openings. The apparatus includes a nose insert for use with or attachment to a rivet gun or attaching apparatus. The insert forms a stop engageable by a preformed rivet head to maintain a predetermined clearance between the rivet head and adjacent component when the rivet is attached to components forming an assembly.
