    • A backlight unit, being thin-sized, but having high definition and high uniformity of luminance, and a video display apparatus applying the same therein, has a plural number of sets of at least one or more of light source(s) (1) and a light guidance plate (2) for guiding lights from the light source(s) to a side of a liquid crystal panel, to be emitted therefrom, wherein the light source(s) is/are disposed on one end side of the light guidance plate, and other set of light source is disposed on a rear surface side of the other end of the light guidance plate opposite to the one end. A gap or groove (4) is formed mutually between each of the light guidance plates in the plural number of sets, and if assuming that width of the gap or groove is “d”, distance between a light incident surface of the liquid crystal panel and a light emission surface of the light guidance plate, or distance between a light incident surface of an optical member disposed between the liquid crystal panel and the light guidance plate and a light emission surface of the light guidance plate is “h”, and further 2.0 mm>d≧0.1 mm and 10.0 mm>h≧0.4 mm, then the following condition is satisfied: 4≦h/d≦100.

    • An image display apparatus includes a backlight unit including a plurality of light sources arranged in a flat, a reflecting portion for reflecting light from the light sources, a diffuser for diffusing the light from the light sources and the light reflected from the reflecting portion, and a chassis for maintaining or supporting the light sources, the reflecting portion and the diffuser; and a liquid crystal display unit which receives the light diffused by the diffuser of the backlight unit. Concave portions are formed in the chassis at positions corresponding to electrodes of the plurality of light sources, positions corresponding to light-emitting portions of the light sources are arranged in a flat, and a circuit for driving the liquid crystal display unit is provided on a rear surface of a planar portion of the chassis. Accordingly, it is possible to realize a thin lightweight backlight with high luminance and high luminance uniformity.

    • An angular velocity sensor includes a tuning-fork-shaped substrate (1), drivers (110) that are provided on the arms forming a tuning fork and vibrate the arms; monitors (150) for detecting vibrations generated by the drivers (110); and detectors (120) for detecting displacement of vibrations made in application of an angular velocity. The drivers (110), the monitors (150), and the detectors (120) are made of a lower electrode layer, a piezoelectric thin film, and an upper electrode layer formed on the arms. The outer peripheral edge of the piezoelectric thin film is shaped like a step having at least one flat portion. The flat portion along the outer peripheral edge has no upper electrode layer formed thereon. This structure prevents short circuits between the lower electrode layer and the upper electrode layer.
