    • A system is provided for selectively perforating multiple zones in a well either simultaneously, or in series, having isolation barriers, or packers, located between the perforating multiple zones, without moving the system with respect to the well. The system includes a tubing string which carries at least a first and a second perforating gun. A first and second packer for isolating the perforating guns from each other. A source of actuating fluid pressure for the firing head is provided, which may be the bore of the tubing string. A first selective communication device is provided for isolating the second firing head from the source of actuating fluid pressure until after the first perforating gun has been fired, and for then communicating the second firing head with the source of actuating fluid pressure in response to firing of the first perforating gun.

    • An apparatus and method for snubbing tubing-conveyed perforating guns in and out of a well bore. The apparatus includes a string of perforating guns wherein adjacent perforating guns are attached using a connector having an upper mandrel which is attached to a lower mandrel by left-hand threaded connection. A ratchet positioned on the upper mandrel allows left-hand rotation of the upper mandrel and ratchet with respect to the lower mandrel while preventing right-hand rotation of the ratchet with respect to the lower mandrel. Shear screws interconnecting the upper mandrel and the ratchet may be sheared upon application of a predetermined torque to allow right-hand rotation of the upper mandrel with respect to the ratchet. The lower mandrel has a recess or reduced diameter portion which is adapted for sealing engagement by a pipe ram in a blowout preventer. The connector allows snubbing of a tubing-conveyed perforating gun string in and out of a well bore under pressure while utilizing existing and unmodified workover equipment and methods of snubbing the guns into the well bore and retrieving them are disclosed.

    • The method and apparatus for actuating a perforating gun by pressure includes a pressure actuated gun firing head disposed on the perforating gun for detonating the shaped charges of the gun. The gun is attached to a pipe string and located downhole adjacent the formation to be perforated. The pressure actuated firing head includes a housing with a plug and piston. The piston has a firing pin adapted for engagement with the initiator of a perforating gun upon reciprocation within the housing. Initially, the piston is pressure balanced until the time of actuation. The plug is responsive to fluid pressure of a predetermined magnitude at the time of the actuation of the gun firing head. Upon effecting pressure on the plug, the plug unbalances the piston causing the piston to reciprocate. Upon reciprocation of the piston, the firing pin engages the initiator to detonate the shaped charges of the perforating gun. Pressure may be effected on the firing head through the pipe string, or the annulus, or both. The firing head includes a plurality of passageways, as well as the plug and piston, arranged in a manner whereby should leakage of well fluids into the firing head inadvertently occur, the apparatus is rendered inoperative and therefore the firing head cannot inadvertently be fired due to the occurrence of unforeseen intervening circumstances.

    • Method and apparatus for perforating a cased borehole in a single trip into the well include two or more strings of perforating guns supported within the wellbore. The strings of guns are attached to the lower end of a pipe string and located downhole with one of the strings of guns adjacent a formation to be perforated. The first string of guns is then detonated by hydraulic actuation to perforate the formation. The pipe string is then adjusted to properly align the second string of guns either with the same formation or with another formation in the wellbore. The second string of guns may then be actuated by any known method such as impact or pressure actuation. This method and apparatus allows the same formation to be perforated twice thereby doubling the number of perforations in the cased borehole or permits the testing or completion of another formation in the same well.

    • A differential pressure actuated vent assembly is connected into an oil well tool string. In one form of the invention, the tool string includes a packer device, a perforating gun attached to the lower end of the tubing string, with the vent assembly being interposed between the gun and the packer device. Fluid pressure within the tubing string is effected on one face of a piston associated with the vent assembly, which reciprocates the piston and communicates the interior of the tubing string with the annulus around the tubing string while carrying out the step of perforating the formation. Movement of the piston and the subsequent detonation of the gun preferably are both accomplished sequentially in response to the dropping of a bar down through the tool string. The bar opens a passageway leading to the piston, and immediately thereafter, before the pressure differential between the interior of the tubing string and the annulus is equalized, the gun is detonated, thereby obviating damage to the formation.

    • A cased borehole has a perforating gun suspended in underlying relationship relative to a packer device. A tubing string has a seal assembly connected to the lower end thereof, and an extension tube downwardly extends from the seal assembly. A seal housing is connected to the packer and receives the seal assembly therewithin. The tubing string is run downhole until the end of the extension tube is in proximity of a gun firing head while the seal assembly is unseated from the housing, so that the fluid in proximity of the gun firing head is displaced with clean fluid which flows from the surface, down the tubing string, and out of the end of the extension tube. After the gun firing head is cleaned, the tubing is lowered, the seal assembly is sealingly received within the seal housing, and the gun firing head is actuated by lowering a gun firing device down through the interior of the tubing string, seal assembly, and extension tube, thereby perforating the casing so that production flows from a payzone, through the perforations, into the lower annulus, through a one-way valve of the seal housing, and up the tubing string to the surface of the earth.
