    • A method of supporting multiple quality of service (QoS) levels for data being transmitted between two networking devices, such as customer equipment (CE), that use Ethernet and Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM). The method supports multiple QoS services in a network where a first CE is connected to a first edge device (interworking unit) using the Ethernet protocol and a second CE is connected to a second edge device using the ATM protocol. The edge devices may be directly connected together or they may be connected through a network backbone using any generally accepted network protocol. The first CE may be connected to the first edge device using a single Ethernet port, multiple Ethernet ports, a single virtual local area network (VLAN), or multiple VLAN's. The second CE is connected to an edge device using a single virtual circuit connection (VCC), a single virtual path connection (VPC), or multiple VCC's. The method ensures QoS for data transmitted between the first and the second CE via the Ethernet protocol to the ATM protocol and vice versa.

    • For applying adhesive to a shoe bottom an applicator (708) is provided which comprises a plurality of fingers (732) spring-urged towards the work and end portions thereof providing an adhesive-applying surface (736) to which adhesive is supplied via tubes (738) to outlets in said end portions. The applicator is capable of rotation about an axis which passes through the adhesive-applying surface (736) and in addition, the applicator can tilt about a further axis (P) which intersects said axis of rotation at the adhesive-applying surface. Drive means is also provided for effecting relative lengthwise, heightwise and widthwise movement between a shoe support (18) and a tool holder (670) by which the applicator is supported. For controlling the flow of adhesive a valve (744) is provided which is pneumatically operated and also has a suck-back feature. Moreover, the arrangement of the adhesive supply parts (740-752) and the supply of air under pressure (772-776) is such that the applicator can be rotated through 360.degree. or more without the need for thereafter reversing the direction of rotation, e.g. in order to unwind any flexible connections.

    • A shoe support (18) for use in a machine for operating progressively onside wall portions of a lasted shoe upper comprises a last pin (722) and a toe support (792) both of which are movable heightwise to bring a shoe supported thereby to a heel seat height datum and toe end height datum as determined respectively by a holddown (450) and toe abutment (806). Heel end centralizing means (390) and toe end centralizing means (822) are also provided. When the shoe has been properly located the last pin is urged to pivot toewardly thus to cause the last pin to "bind" on the last pin hole formed in the last and, by the counter-force supplied by the toe support (792) the shoe is thus securely clamped on the last pin and toe support, such that as the side wall roughing tool (250) is caused to progress around the side wall portions of the shoe, the toe abutment 806 can be moved to an out-of-the-way position, as the tool approaches the toe end of the shoe, and similarly the holddown and heel end centralizing assembly (780) can be bodily retracted to an out-of-the-way position as the tool approaches the heel end of the shoe. Preferably before the retraction of said assembly (780) the toe abutment (860) is restored to its operative position.

    • A computer-controlled machine for progressively roughing marginal portions of shoe bottoms comprises a tool carrier on which two rotary roughing brushes (168) are carried side-by-side, and a shoe support (18) between which and the tool carrier relative movement takes place lengthwise, widthwise and heightwise of the shoe bottom. Each tool (168) is mounted so as to "float" heightwise in relation to the tool carrier, resilient means (175) being provided for urging each tool independently downwardly towards the shoe support (18). In this way the pressure applied by each tool to the shoe bottom in the operation of the machine can be controlled and/or regulated. For effecting relative movement between tool carrier and shoe support, numerically controlled motors are provided, operating in response to a programmed instruction. Such instruction can be made using the machine in a path-determining mode. The machine also comprises sensing means for sensing a defined heightwise position of the tool (168) in the path-determining mode of the machine, and the co-ordinate axis values for each selected position of tool carrier and shoe support are digitized, for each point, in relation to such defined heightwise position of the tool relative to the tool carrier. Similarly, the tool is maintained in a defined heightwise position in relation to the tool carrier during any brush grinding operation.
