    • A rocker arm is swingably supported by a control shaft that has an eccentric control cam formed thereon. The rocker arm is swung by a torque of a crankshaft of the engine. Two swing cams are swingably supported by a drive shaft and actuate respective engine valves to make an open/close operation of the same by receiving the swinging movement from the rocker arm. The rocker arm comprises a cylindrical base portion through which the control shaft passes; a first projected end that is provided at a first radially outside part of the cylindrical base portion in the vicinity of one axial end of the cylindrical base portion, the first projected end receiving the torque from the crankshaft for carrying out the pivotal movement of the rocker arm; and two second projected ends that are spaced from each other and provided at a second radially outside part of the cylindrical base portion, the second projected ends actuating the two swing cams when the rocker arm is swung. The first and second radially outside parts are opposite with respect to an axis of the cylindrical base portion.

    • A rocker arm which supporting a free cam follower is rotatably supported by an engine-cylinder-mounted rocker shaft to lift cylinder valves against valve springs. The rocker arm and the free cam follower are in cooperation with first and second cams on a camshaft. A lever is supported by the rocker arm and has a locked position wherein the lever is in driving engagement with the free cam follower to provide a positive motion connection between the free cam follower and the rocker arm and a released position wherein the lever is out of driving engagement with the free cam follower to provide relative motion of the free cam follower to the rocker arm. A hydraulic piston and a release spring cooperate with each other to shift the lever between the locked position and the released position. For adjusting the shifting operation in timed relationship with motion of the rocker arm, a latch is arranged to restrain motion of the hydraulic piston when the rocker arm is unlifted and until the rocker arm is lifted.

    • A valve timing control apparatus including a rotary member drivingly connected to an engine crankshaft for rotation with the engine crankshaft, and a drive mechanism for transmitting rotation of the rotary member to a camshaft. The drive mechanism includes a piston member provided for reciprocation between first and second positions within the rotary member to rotate the camshaft with respect to the rotary member. The piston member defines first and second pressure chambers on the opposite sides thereof along with the rotary member. A valve member is provided for movement between third and fourth positions. The valve member is adapted to connect the first pressure chamber to a pressure source while connecting the second pressure chamber to a drain port to produce a pressure differential between the first and second pressure chambers to move the piston member toward the second position when the valve member moves from the third position to the fourth position. The valve member is adapted to connect the first pressure chamber to the drain port while connecting the second pressure chamber to the pressure source to produce a pressure differential between the first and second chambers so as to move the piston member toward the first position when the valve member moves from the fourth position to the third position. The valve member is moved according to engine operating conditions.
