    • The invention provides a clamping apparatus, particularly for receiving and clampingly retaining electrode body blanks having prismatic or circular cross section for erosive machining devices. A clamping block has at one of its surfaces an essentially centrally arranged clamping chamber to receive the electrode. Two adjacent walls of the clamping chamber are provided with clamping screws protruding into the clamping chamber. An approximately central position of the workpiece in the clamping chamber is achieved by the provision of distance plates with preselectable thickness, which are inserted into the clamping chamber between two walls thereof and the surface of the workpiece, before the workpiece is clamped by tightening the clamping screws. This clamping apparatus is inexpensive and rugged, so that the electrode, once machined and used, respectively, may always remain clamped and therefore may be used again with a very high precision as far as its position is concerned.

    • A suction device is movable between a receiving position in which it removes a sheet of film from a magazine and a delivery position in which it transfers the sheet to a conveyor. The effective width of the suction device approximates or equals the width of the smallest sheet of film to be transferred. Sheets having a width greater than the smallest width are gripped in the region of one end thereof leaving the remainder of such a sheet free to deflect. In order to permit proper transfer of all sheets into the conveyor, the latter is provided with grooved rollers which lift the deflected portions of larger sheets into the conveyor. In the delivery position, the suction device is located opposite one portion of the conveyor. The conveying force exerted by this portion of the conveyor is smaller than the gripping force which the suction device exerts on a sheet but larger than the conveying force exerted by a laterally adjacent portion of the conveyor. The portion of a sheet in the latter part of the conveyor constitutes a moment arm when the sheet enters the conveyor and the vacuum in the suction device fails to shut off. The tendency is for the sheet to rotate about an axis which is located in the vicinity of the suction device and is normal to the sheet. This tendency is reduced by maintaining a relatively low conveying force in the portion of the conveyor remote from the suction device and maintaining a relatively high gripping force for the suction device.

    • A method and apparatus for threading the electrode wire of a travelling wire EDM apparatus through an aperture in a workpiece. Prior to threading the wire through the aperture in the workpiece, the wire is continuously annealed and straightened and is passed through a nozzle to which fluid under pressure is supplied for forming a jet stream at the outlet of the nozzle. Prior to a threading or rethreading operation the wire, which is continuously fed by pulling by a wire conveyor mechanism, is cut off proximate to the outlet of the nozzle. The jet stream is aimed at the aperture in the workpiece and the end of the wire is fed through the aperture, while being maintained coaxially by the jet stream. The consecutive steps for feeding the end of the wire through the aperture in the workpiece are effected in sequence for first threading the wire through a pre-drilled starting hole in the workpiece or for rethreading the wire through a cut in the workpiece after accidental rupture of the wire during a cutting operation.
