    • A magnetic roller comprising a diamagnetic cylinder rotatable about magnetic poles which extend axially inside the cylinder and are each formed by similar poles of magnets lying axially beside each other is made to generate a substantially homogeneous magnetic field over its full working width, thus enabling the magnets to be made of strongly ferromagnetic, anisotropic material, by the provision, over and along one or more of the magnetic poles between the magnetic pole and the diamagnetic cylinder, of a material having high magnetic permeability, such as a strip of soft iron of between 0.1 and 1 mm. in thickness fixed to and not wider than the surface of the magnetic pole. The magnetic roller is especially useful in electrophotographic developing apparatus for transporting magnetically attractable developing powder between a powder reservoir and a developing zone in which powder from a magnetic brush formed on the cylinder is applied to electrostatic images on imagewise exposed photoconductive sheet material.

    • Images of fusible toner particles on flexible sheet material, such as applied to paper sheets in electrostatic photocopying machines, are fixed to the material by feeding it through a heating zone in which the particles are softened without fusing them and then passing the material through the nip between smooth rigid pressure roller surfaces which are constantly pressed together under a force sufficiently great to join the heated toner particles superficially one to another and to the sheet structure without forming them into brittle resinous films. An apparatus for carrying out the fixing comprises a set of smooth rigid feed rollers constantly pressed together, preferably by structures like those used for the pressure rollers, under a selected pressure suited for advancing the material into and through a radiant heating zone at a constant speed and thence into the nip of the pressure rollers which are driven at the same peripheral speed.

    • For control of an indirect electrophotographic copier employing an endless photoconductive belt having thereon at least one marking which excites a sensor each time the marking passes a fixed point in the belt path, the movement of the belt is measured electronically by a pulse generator coupled to a belt transport roller and a counter. Any difference between an electronically registered length of the belt and its actual length at a moment of sensor excitation is registered in a memory. At the end of a copying run pulses from the generator are diverted to the memory which then causes the difference to be corrected by discontinuation of the driving of the belt at an earlier or later moment.
