    • An apparatus for calcining raw material such as the raw material used for making Portland cement. The apparatus is used in conjunction with a preheater and a calciner, such as a rotary kiln, and a cooler. The calciner includes a vessel with means for supplying combustion gas to the bottom of the vessel, an outlet at the top of the vessel, for spent combustion gas and calcined material, a burner for producing a combustion zone intermediate the combustion air supply and the calcined material outlet. Raw material can be supplied to the vessel either from above the combustion zone and below the outlet or from below the combustion zone. The combustion air may be supplied from the cooler or a combination of the cooler and the exhaust gases from the clinkerer. The apparatus is primarily designed for using coal as a fuel.

    • A fluidized solids reactor which is capable of using either a gaseous fuel or a liquid fuel. The reactor employs a fuel system capable of supplying either a gas or a liquid to novel nozzles. The nozzles disperse the fuel throughout the fluidized bed of pulverulent material. Each nozzle includes a pair of concentric tubular members each opening into the fluidized bed. When gas is used as fuel, it is supplied to the outer tube. When oil is used as a fuel, it is supplied to the inner tube of the nozzle and air under pressure is also supplied to the inner tube. In addition, when liquid fuel is used, air under pressure is supplied to the outer tube for cooling the inner pipe.

    • A constriction plate for admission of hot fluidizing gas to a bed of material, e.g. pyrites, comprises a plurality of apertures having ducts therein for the passage of streams of said gas together with a cooler gas, arrangement being such that each stream of said hot gas is surrounded by cooler gas. Fig. 2 shows a portion of the constriction plate 26 adjacent to the chamber wall: fluidizing gas is admitted to a windbox below plate 26 and passes into pipes 30 which support cup members 64 serving to restrict flow of gas to pipes 30 and to prevent solids falling into the windbox. Each pipe 30 is surrounded at its upper end by a pipe member 54 to which a cooling gas can be supplied by means of manifold 72 via pipe 84 (see Fig. 6). Pipe 30 is supported on the plate by flange 60 and pipe member 54 supports a cup-shaped ceramic member 56. Cooling gas is supplied to manifolds 72 by pipe 76 and the arrangement of the manifolds and pipes 84 is such as to effect cooling (by the cool gas) of the plate, the body of which may be in the form of brick or other refractory placed or cast around the gas supply manifold and pipes. Fig. 3 (not shown) illustrates a spatial arrangement of these gas supply conduits.
