    • A horizontal heat treatment device continuously subjects an untreated continuous flat object to heat treatment while horizontally transferring the untreated object within a heat treatment chamber. Seal chambers are interconnected to the untreated-object loading opening and treated-object unloading opening of the heat treatment chamber. A passage is connected to an opening of each of the seal chambers, the opening located on the side opposite the heat treatment chamber. The untreated-object passage loading opening interconnected to the untreated-object seal chamber loading opening and the treated-object passage unloading opening interconnected to the treated-object seal chamber unloading opening are the untreated-object loading opening and treated-object unloading opening of the heat treatment device. A pair of gas ejection nozzles are provided at upper and lower positions of the passages. The nozzles eject gas in specific directions, and the nozzle openings have a specific shape, a direction, and a length.

    • The invention utilizes fluid bed air heaters for burning coarse solid fuels which supply heated gases to annular shaft kilns or double inclined shaft kilns. The solid fuels are introduced into a fluidized bed of inert material, such as sand, alumina or ash, through means of an air lock and the hot gases of combustion pass through a cyclone separator to remove solid materials, which can be reintroduced into the fluidized bed. The hot gases are injected into the kilns to supply heat as needed for calcining or burning limestone or similar materials. Temperature control of the gas leaving the fluid bed air heater and reduced contamination of the burned materials are disclosed advantages of the present invention.

    • Disclosed are a method and apparatus for manufacturing sponge iron by the continuous reduction of iron oxides in a shaft utilizing recirculation gases. Reaction gas is removed from the shaft furnace, substantially cleaned of all CO.sub.2 and H.sub.2 O, and then divided into at least two flow portions one of which is passed to a gas generator comprising a gas generating shaft substantially filled with a solid reducing agent and a plasma burner arranged in the lower portion of said shaft. An oxidant is injected into the hot gas from the plasma burner so as to form a gas mixture comprised primarily of CO and H.sub.2, which gas mixture is then mixed with the other flow portion of the cleaned reaction gas in such proportion that the temperature of the resulting reduction gas is suitable for the reduction of iron oxides in the shaft furnace.

    • Air heated outside the calcining zone of a shaft kiln is passed through raw material in a hopper mounted above the kiln in order to preheat the raw material. In one embodiment the preheating air is heated by an excess air burner which communicates with the hopper. In another embodiment, the hot calcined material is cooled by forcing cool air through it and the heated air is utilized as preheating air by directing it through a by-pass conduit which connects the cooling zone of the kiln with an extension of the hopper. In neither embodiment does the preheating air constitute combustion supporting air.
