    • A vise and base system is disclosed. The vise includes a stationary jaw, a frame with a frame perimeter wall and a moveable jaw, the stationary jaw being fixed to the frame, and the moveable jaw that is movable along the frame. The vise cooperates with a hollow base that includes a first recessed area that is adapted for mating with the frame perimeter wall and a second recessed area that is adapted for mating with the stationary jaw. The base also includes a base panel that is attached to the base perimeter wall and a layer of flexible high friction material that is attached to the base panel, such that the base can support the vise in a generally horizontal position and in a generally vertical position.

    • The present modular attachments for surface mount tools provide apparatus for removably attaching a normally permanently mounted tool to a support surface. The attachments include a first or support structure mounted base plate and a second, tool mounted plate which engages the first plate. A tool (e.g., vise, grinder, small bench mounted drill press, etc.) is affixed to the second plate. One plate has a series of outwardly extending fingers or flanges, while the other plate has a series of slots in an inwardly extending flange. The outward fingers of one plate insert into the slots of the other plate, with the two plates being locked together when one is turned relative to the other. The modular attachments may be used for securing various types of surface mounted tools and appliances temporarily and interchangeably in place to a workbench or other work surface.

    • A workpiece holding device for a T-slotted machine table includes a locator block having a planar bottom surface, a mounting hole that intersects the bottom surface to define a center point, at least one workpiece locating surface disposed a predetermined distance from the center point, and a key protruding from the bottom surface at a second point offset a predetermined distance from the center point. The protruding portion of the key has a width substantially the same as the T-slot opening so as to slidably mount in the T-slot. A fastener extends through the mounting hole and secures the locator block to a T-nut slidably mounted in the T-slot. A clamp secured to the locator block clamps the workpiece to the locating surface of the locator block. A method of using the device is also disclosed.

    • A workholding apparatus includes a top jaw member and a bottom master jaw element. The master jaw element is movably supported on a base member and has a keypart fixed thereto and projecting upwardly. The keypart receives the top jaw member. An aperture of the top jaw member having closed ends, and an open mouth surrounded by vertical walls, fits over the keypart of the top jaw member. The keypart can have a cross-section having portions resembling a double dovetail configuration. The aperture of the top jaw member has similar dovetail-shaped sections to receive the keypart. The keypart includes a takeup member having an arcuate keeper element secured and projecting from a surface of the keypart opposite the dovetail-shaped portions. The keeper element projects outwardly a small distance to seat on an inclined surface of the aperture very close to the vertical walls thereof. Thus the top member preferably is contacted by the keeper element at a location on the inclined surface within about 0.100 inch, and more preferably 0.060 inch from the mouth of the aperture.

    • A work piece clamping device is composed of a clamping block, a locking cover, a plate button, a support rod, a press rod, a tightening nut engaged with the press rod, and a fastening member. The clamping block is provided with a vertical wall for locating a work piece in place on a workbench top. The clamping block can be moved up and down along the support rod by the fastening member which is located under the workbench top and is movably fitted over the support rod. The clamping block is exerted on by the pressure of the plate button so as to hold securely the work piece on the workbench top.

    • An apparatus for forming heat exchanger core assemblies having a plurality of generally elongate tubes seated in uniformly spaced openings in a pair of spaced parallel header members is disclosed. The apparatus includes a generally flat, horizontal support table and a pair of header carriers mounted for horizontal reciprocatory movement respectively toward and away from two opposed sides of the table. The apparatus further includes a pair of elongate, horizontally disposed guide members for locating and aligning a plurality of tubes with the respective openings in header members. Each of the guide members includes a base portion and a plurality of finger members, each finger member projecting in a first position vertically upwardly from the base portion. The guide member further includes a plurality of upwardly opening elongate, tube receiving slots between the finger members, the slots extending parallel to the adjacent side of the table. The guide members are formed from an elastomeric material, such as a polyurethane, so that each of the finger members can be deformed elastically under imposition of a lateral force thereagainst and return to an original position when the force is removed.
