    • A CATV system in which a technician in the field requests via a field client that a node of the CATV system be tested for ingress. The CATV system includes a headend facility that is coupled to a CATV distribution network. The CATV distribution network includes a plurality of nodes through which upstream signals are transmitted to the headend facility. A method of ingress testing for use in the CATV system includes one step of receiving at the headend facility a first reverse telemetry signal transmitted by a first field client that is coupled to the CATV distribution network at a first location downstream from the headend facility. Another step of the method includes selecting at the headend facility a first test node from the plurality of nodes of the CATV distribution network, wherein the selection is based upon the received first reverse telemetry signal. The method also includes the step of measuring first upstream signals from the selected first test node to obtain a first plurality of measurement values for the first upstream signals. Finally, the method includes transmitting from the headend facility via the CATV distribution network a forward telemetry signal that includes the first plurality of measurement values.

    • A TV graphical user interface provided on a TV screen includes a graphical channel changer for enabling a user to select a required TV channel among about 1000 channels carried by a satellite TV system. The graphical channel changer contains a vertical channel bar composed of channel boxes that display numbers and logos of selected TV channels. To switch the TV set to a required TV channel, the user directs the pointing device at the graphical channel box that indicates the required channel. Up and down scroll bars, that allow the user to scan through the entire list of TV channels, extend beyond a safe area on the screen provided to accomodate a picture to overscan conditions. A direct access bar is arranged so as to cause the channel boxes to display numbers and logos of a selected group of channels when the user directs the pointing device at the area of the direct access bar that represents the selected group of channels.

    • Transitions among different upstream frequency channels in a cable television plant in order to transmit data occur while considering the noise level of the upstream frequency channel presently being used to transmit data. By taking into account the noise level of the presently used upstream frequency channel, the CMTS in a cable plant can make a more intelligent decision as to whether it is worthwhile changing the upstream frequency channel for a group of cable modems. A spectrum analyzer determines the noise level of a presently used frequency channel. A bit error rate for the present frequency channel is detected. The spectrum analyzer then determines whether the bit error rate exceeds a threshold value. Is so, it is then determined whether the noise level of the present frequency channel is greater than or less than the noise level of another frequency channel having the lowest noise level plus a buffer noise value. If the present noise level is greater, a transition is made to the other frequency channel with the lower noise level. If not, the cable plant continues using the present frequency channel. The noise level of the presently used frequency channel is measured at the CMTS upon receipt of an empty data packet arriving at a known timing mark.

    • A system and method for providing user input to an application executing on an interactive television system wherein a user provides non-textual information to the interactive television system and this information is converted by a server to textual information which is provided to the application. In one embodiment, a digitizer pad coupled to a set-top box is used to digitize the user's handwriting. The digitized information is conveyed to a remote server which converts the digitized handwriting data into textual information. The textual information is conveyed to the set-top box, where it is input to an application executing on the set-top box. In another embodiment, a microphone is coupled to a set-top box. The microphone allows the user to input voice information which is digitized and conveyed to the server for conversion into textual information. The textual information is conveyed back to the set-top box and is input to an application executing on the set-top box.

    • A method of reducing noise and ingress in cable return paths is disclosed in which the return frequency spectrum is divided into two regions; one frequency region being for transmissions from in-home devices such as television settops and personal computers, and another frequency region being for transmissions from communications devices called coaxial termination units located between the drop cable and the home coaxial wiring. By locating blocking filters between the drop cable and home coaxial wiring, undesirable signals emanating in the home in the second part of the return spectrum are prevented from entering the cable return system. The location of the blocking filter reduces the noise in the second part of the return spectrum substantially and allows the establishment of reliable telecommunications services on the cable return in such second part of the return spectrum. The blocking filters can be incorporated into the coaxial termination unit and the bandwidth of such filters varied from the head-end to allow more or less bandwidth to be used by in-home devices.

    • In a digital television broadcast that contains executable code segments that are associated with specific video segments, a context duration time is defined for each executable component. The context duration time is determined so as to correspond to the context of the video segment that is associated with the executable component. In a preferred embodiment, the context duration time for the executable component is determined when the corresponding video segment is being prepared for encoding into the transport stream. The context duration time is subsequently included in the encoding of the executable component in the transport stream. When the executable component is decoded from the transport stream, the context duration time is used to effect a termination of the executable component after the context duration time has elapsed. In this manner, each launched executable component will be terminated within a predetermined time from the start of execution of the executable component, independent of the subsequent contents of the transport stream.
