    • Systems and methods are provided in which video information streams are encoded and transmitted with optimal utilization of constrained bit-rate channel. In accordance with one embodiment, among others, a system is provided, which includes synchronous multi-channel encoder (SMEs), a system multiplex controller (SMC), switches, and a multiplexer. In combination, these components receive an input video signal, and produce encoded video bit streams from the received input video signal. Each encoded video bit stream is substantially identical to other encoded video bit streams, but each encoded video bit stream has a different bit rate than the other encoded video bit streams. An optimal encoded video bit stream is determined from the encoded video bit streams. That optimal encoded video bit stream is selected, multiplexed, and than delivered to the output.

    • A method and arrangement are disclosed for transmitting television programs via a plurality of channels, and an additional data service, for example, an Electronic Program Guide, via a selected television channel. While processing and displaying the program guide, prior art television receivers cannot continue the reproduction of a currently received TV program because the program is generally transmitted via a different channel. The invention provides a solution to this problem by duplicating a signal component representing, for example, the audio contents of the various television programs in said selected television channel. This allows customers to keep up with the service they were watching before, and to immediately return to the program if something of interest appears to happen. The invention is particularly applicable in Digital Video Broadcast (DVB) systems where each channel can accommodate a plurality of TV programs.

    • An implementation, as described herein, facilitates fast start-up of a new media stream while avoiding temporal interruption (i.e. “hiccups”) of the presentation of that new media stream. At least one implementation, described herein, coordinates the delivery of multiple simultaneous media streams on a media-stream network. Its coordination accounts for traversal of bandwidth-restricted chokepoints; quickly stopping delivery of one or more media streams from the set of streams; quickly initiating delivery and presentation of one or more new media streams not previously in the set (i.e., a “channel change”) and producing clean playback of all of the streams in the set, despite their different timelines.
