    • A brake actuator redirects pressurized air that compressed a parking brake spring to the other side of a piston upon release of the parking brake spring. The redirected air is clean air which removes contaminates and pushes them out a one-way check exhaust. A first embodiment of the brake actuator uses an external quick release valve to take exhaust air from a pressure chamber and direct it to the spring chamber. A second embodiment of the brake actuator uses the spring brake control valve to take exhaust air from the pressure chamber and direct it to the spring chamber. In each embodiment, the pressurized air pushes out the excess air past the one-way check exhaust, carrying all contaminates with it. The brake actuator can also advantageously be operated under water without the water entering the spring chamber.

    • Conveyer belt braking apparatus comprises an idler roller (10) rotatable about an axle, and a brake member (40) mounted adjacent the idler roller and movable relative to the roller between a first, inoperative position adjacent a belt supported by the roller and a second, braking position against the belt. An operating mechanism (26, 28) is arranged to sense the direction of rotation of the roller and to move the brake member from the first, inoperative position to the second, braking position when the direction of rotation of the roller reverses in use. Preferably the mechanism includes a clutch bearing (26) that engages to move the brake member from the first inoperative position to the second, braking position thereof when the roller reverses direction.

    • A clutch assembly 100 is provided for a motor having an armature shaft and a worm shaft having a worm constructed and arranged to engage a gear. The clutch assembly includes a clutch housing 112 including a race surface 132; a cam 117 coupled to the worm shaft; follower structure 122 operatively associated with the cam; a clutch plate 114, and a clutch coupler 118 associated with the clutch plate, the cam, and the follower structure. The coupler is coupled to the armature shaft for rotation therewith, such that rotation of the coupler rotates the clutch plate, the cam and follower structure, and thus the worm shaft. During a back drive condition of the motor, when torque is transmitted to the worm shaft and thus to the cam, the cam is constructed and arranged to causes the follower structure 122 to contact and exert pressure on the race surface 132 thereby preventing rotation of the worm shaft.

    • A brake slack adjuster is provided that includes a housing having an opening with a gear arranged within the opening. The housing includes a bore adjacent to the opening. A worm gear has an axis disposed within the bore and is an engagement with the gear. The worm gear has an end portion with helical teeth. An actuator loosely is arranged within the bore and includes an inner surface with complementary helical teeth engaging the helical teeth of the worm gear. An actuator rod includes an end arranged within the actuator aperture. The rod end is captured in the actuator by a retainer. A pawl assembly is supported by the housing and coacts with the actuator for retaining the actuator in a rotational position relative to the axis. Biasing members are arranged between the actuator and housing bore to urge the actuator engagement with the worm gear end portion. The actuator includes an elongated slot with and end of the pawl assembly captured with in the elongated slot to prevent rotational movement of the actuator relative to the housing. The elongated slot permits movement of the actuator in the direction of the axis.

    • An incremental braking apparatus and method includes a first rotating member having a plurality of rigid stops spaced circumferentially around an outer cylindrical surface of the first rotating member, and a plurality of flexible stops arranged in a plurality of rows on a stationary member. The flexible stops are selectively movable toward the first rotating member from a disengaged position into an engaged position in which the flexible stops engage the rigid stops to provide a braking action on the first rotating member. An actuator with a beveled edge for engaging the outer ends of the flexible stops is operable to move a selected number of rows of the flexible stops into their engaged positions to provide an incremental braking effect. The rows of flexible stops are staggered such that the flexible stops in adjacent rows are not in circumferential alignment.
